Compaq Presario C500 - A preference on distribution?
Hola amigos! *deliberately says with absolutely no Spanish accent*
Yo tengo una-- just kidding.
I have a Compaq Presario C500 (not the C500T) and I was wondering that since my laptop (technically considered a notebook) is older if anyone would recommend certain distribution for said computer? I currently am running the paid version of Zorin 12.1. It just seems like no matter what I run on it something always lags i.e. streaming videos in the browser or playing games online (in browser as well).
Is this a result of the OS being too quick (per say) for the hardware or just the hardware being older period and is there anything I can do about it/a certain distribution of Linux that someone would recommend for an older(ish) system like mine?
Fun fact: I use to run Ubuntu on my old-as-dirt Dell Inspiron 1000. It actually kinda did alright! aha
Much thanks,
You-Know-Who!

With a 1.7Ghz Celeron Mobile processor the C500 isn't going to be fast. If you have not maxed out the RAM to 2GB which I think is the limit there isn't much else you can do except run a lightweight desktop and applications.
Are you running Zorin lite? antiX, Bodhi or Lubuntu might be worth trying.
No, it's not the "lite" version. I mean, the videos aren't really that bad, I guess what I should have said is that it's really when attempting to play any online games is really what lags -if it's not the sound goin staccato on me the graphics are sure to almost literally shit on the entirety of the experience but I figured it was a) the computer be closer to dirt, b) being connected to the internet alone and c) attempting to play the game online all at the same time. It's pretty similar to when I tried running Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1000 but not having to use as much toilet paper to wipe its ass when it's finally done loading.. or unloading, so to speak, aha! Also, I'll have to look into how much RAM I have in this thing. Knowing the previous owner well enough (family, aha) I'd say that there's a good chance they might have already amped up the RAM to its maximum potential.
That machine will never play action games well, no matter which distro you get.
Thank you, I appreciate the info. Should I assume the same about the reason I can never get a single program to run after download and installation by the rules? There's always "something missing" or "broken" or "unexpectedly" needing something else that needs something else that needs the first thing first but you can't have the first thing unless you're unexpectedly not missing any more.. And I don't know any ninjas! BS!

Likely a better distro for you would be AntiX, works well on older equipment - no internet game will be fast with a 1.3GHz processor, it has to move too much data, & won't be able to keep up, you'll need a 2GHz most likely for that, & a decent amount of ram would also help.
