what's next after installed linux rc kernel

I have followed the kernelnewbies guide to install the staging rc kernel to my box.

I can successfully boot up but I found the pc has no sound and the USB HDD cannot be accessed. I wonder what to do next to trace these issues. I hope this forum or somewhere can give me some hints to startup with.

Figure out the drivers required from a working/livecd OS with
Code:
lspci -k
Build the usb and mass media storage under device drivers in kernel config, rebuild and retry until all requirements are satisfied.

Generic Kernel:
Code:
lspci -k
......
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller (rev 31)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel
......
rc kernel:
Code:
lspci -k
......
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller (rev 31)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. 100 Series/C230 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
......
I found that modules are not shows in rc kernels. then,

Code:
lsmod

Module Size Used by
x86_pkg_temp_thermal 20480 0
efivarfs 16384 1
Is the "make defconfig" simply config without any module?

Will that be quicker if I duplicate the config from generic kernel? (although I'd have some issues before...)
I suppose, in the meantimes, I will try the menuconfig first.

Yes, just copy the config from /boot or /proc/config.gz and modify at your preference.
If you select Y instead of M it'll be built in and would simply not show in lsmod but that's not a problem.

ok, found "make localmodconfig" which have saved my day.
Code:
cp /boot/config-`uname -r`* .config
make localmodconfig
but there is another issue of my NVIDIA driver. Do you have any hint how to build it?
And btw, if lsmod could not show the built-in modules, how to show them?

For nvidia you just need to download official drivers from nvidia website if you need proprietary ones, if not just use nouveau module in the kernel.
I think back in the day there was a modules.bultin in /lib/modules/$(uname -r).
