I just bought a Sony 8x DVD player. It works fine in Windows 2000. I backed up music, software and data files from Winows so I could transfer them to Feodra Core 2. I used to have a secondary cd-rom drive but the DVD drive replaced it.

When in Fedora I can see that there is a /dev/cdrom (the DVD drive) and /dev/cdrom1. I tried to mount and unmount /dev/cdrom run multiple times but it refuses to mount. When trying to mount it I get this error message: "mount: /dev/cdrom already mounted or /mnt/cdrom busy"

I think maybe the link that /dev/cdrom is pointing to may not be the correct device but I am not sure how to fix this.

One way to check the device is valid without mounting is to use the 'file' command. For example my DVD is on /dev/hdc and with a valid disk in the drive I can do this:

# file -Ls /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'MRD_V2 '
#

I also see this line in my dmesg, which is a bit of a giveaway:

...
hdc: QSI DVD-ROM SDR-081, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
...

Does that give you any clues?

I tried running file -Ls /dev/hda (this should be my harddrive) and the output was:
"/dev/hda: x86 boot sector, code offset 0x48"

I then tried running file -Ls /dev/cdrom and the output was:
"/dev/cdrom: x86 boot sector, code offset 0x48"

It seems that /dev/cdrom is pointing to /dev/hda. Is this right and why would this be? I tried doing the same for /dev/hdb - /dev/hdh and the output for all of them (except /dev/hdd which is my other cd drive) was something like "/dev/hdb: no read permission"

I know the system can recognize the drive because when I run hardware browser it shows a cd drive called "Sony DVD RW DW-U18A" with device location of /dev/hdb. Why can't I mount /dev/hdb though?

I just found the problem. The link was pointing to the wrong location for /dev/cdrom. I tried adding /dev/hdb to my fstab file and mounting it and it worked fine.

I have a similar situtation in that I have a Sony DVD RW DW-U10A recognizable by the hardware browser. In there it points to /dev/scd0. However, I was not able to use the CDWriter came with FC1 to write to DVD. The burner displays the DVD media as CD (748mb). Any suggestion on how to make this write like a DVD?

First, what burner are you using? I use either K3B or Nautilus burner.

Also have you tried burning a full DVD-worths of data to it yet or are you afraid an error will occur? It may be that the burner is just showing you that IF you are using a CD the CD is full but if you keep filling more data in and then click burn it may realize then that it is in fact a DVD.
