Can't see much wrong with that file you might want to try either a DVI cable or a custom modeline like the one that it says is supported for 1680x1050 in the detection part like this for the monitor section.

Thanks I think I'm there now, I tried the modeline thing and that centred the screen perfectly. I also subsequently tried a DVI cable which was supplied with the monitor. That did two things; when I boot, the initial scrolling text is now centred properly so you can read it (if you can read very fast....) also when kde runs up and I look in settings/ peripherals/ monitor section the system only presents me with the one maximum resolution - there are no choices any more.

So anyway I'm happy and thanks again for persisting with this for me. Is there somewhere I can find out what the modeline thing and its parameters mean?

Good to hear you got it working properly. A DVI cable is a much better way to connect when you have a VGA connected it treats your digital monitor as an old analog one so you have to do like you were trying to center it with your controls set your resolutions ... this is not needed with the digital. You might want to remove/comment out that modline now and see how it goes without it I suspect now that connected with DVI you will be centered with the normal detection and if you do this change to the DisplaySize 490 320 ##mm like it says in the detection using that built-in native mode or you could probably remove/comment out if you wanted it is usually not needed.
