Nearly there I think
Thanks for the help with this. I tried this again (with my Xorg.conf file as you specified) and the screen sets itself up nicely now. The only remaining problem is that when I goto kde control centre and pick peripherals to set up the resolution, the max available is 1280x 1024 and in my monitor specs on the LG website I should be able to get 1680 x 1050.
Also the /var/log/ xorg log file is much more complete and contains no errors - its quite a large file but I'll post it if needs be. Thanks again, Greeb :) |

I had also faced the same problem. But i have edited the corresponding xf86conf file for the resolution from 1280...
into a lesser one (1024....) also the vertical refreshment rate correected to a lower value. It should also be noted that the corrections should be applied to default monitor settings. Do one thing. While the display manager starts to work press ctrl+alt+backspace to get the terminal screen. Log on as root and edit the display configuration file |

That says it is using the vesa driver you will never get 1680x1050 using that the driver just cannot do that resolution. Did you use the file as I posted when getting this X log? If not then try using that with the radeon driver or using the module-assistant method I mentioned to use ATIs driver.

Really sorry about this. I used the xorg.conf file as you specified, but unfortunately called it Xorg.conf. I think I have worked out by reading the man pages that in the case of no etc/X11/xorg.conf being present the system will generate defaults, which is why I think the Vesa stuff was present in the Xorg.0.log file.
I have now checked carefully that the etc/X11/xorg.conf file you specified is in place and I have posted the contents of the var/log/Xorg.0.log file below. Thanks Stephen, I re saved the file and it now works at the highest resolution - fabulous detail in my photographic images (just been out to French alps)
My Xorg.0.log file is now very different with lots of mention of ATI radeon related stuff. I am still short of about 1 inch of the desktop - the desktop is too far to the right and manual adjustment on the monitor controls drags it back left as far as it can, but cannot get it as far as it needs to go. That almost seems like a sync issue. Are you connected via DVI or VGA cable? BTW you might post the log again so we can see how everything gets detected now oh and try this for the monitor section just edit and add the extra line to tell it the size of the screen as seen by the DDC detection when you had the vesa used.
