Local Console not full screen on laptop ext monitor

I'm running Debian on a Laptop with Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family and a C2D P8600 CPU, have a monitor (Viewsonic VE710s) hooked up to the VGA out. When GRUB2 selection screen comes on it's full screen on the monitor, but when it has booted fully and the prompt comes up, it's only using about 70-80% of the screen.

I have tried a few GRUB_GFXMODE= and fbset 1280 1024 1280 1024 32, but then the text looks funny and it's only using 50% of the scren on the other orientation, the left side.

Does anyone know what settings to use to get the ext vga full screen on ext monitor for laptops? Any tips? GRUB_GFX, fbset, anything?

Thankful for any tips that I can try.

Cheers!

Try booting (or restarting X) with the laptop screen closed.

I wonder if the ext screen will come on then, but I shall give it a try, I am not running X on it, it's just a server.

Thanks for the tip!

Well, that didn't work. Even if I tried closing it. But I just had a brainstorm and previously I tried:

#GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024x24

But that didn't do anything good.

But this fix worked like a charm.

Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" (NOT this obviously)

GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1280x1024
S'all good now. Thanks!
