hp printer won't print photo's

My HP 5740 printer won't print photo's properly in suse 10. The printer works fine under mandrake.
In suse the drivers are installed and for general printing of text etc it works fine. however, when trying to print photo's it will just not print, system seems overloaded, i.e. out of memory, in most applications and the one that does print Gwenview, leaves a line on all photo's printed.
I have seen no threads on any forum describing the same problem. Any ideas??
