After a year of contemplating it. Last night i finally did it and zapped bills wonder system and put on Mandrake 8.2.
Its went on really nivce, i have a KDE desktop and my internet seems to be going at about 6 times the speed of light since I changed over which suits me fine.
however!!!
I have no sound at all.
I have a HOT687V spacewalker monterhboard with on board sound, and it is Fortemedia FM801 sound drivers that I would normally use for it.
I have done some rumaging about and I checked all the mixers and none of them are muted as far as I can see. I checked and it knows what drivers it should be using, cuase I seen it listed, but what I did notice somewhere, dont know where tho - and please forgive me for my Linux inexperience.
Its says that only under root??
Now I dont know if that means it will work if I do something else or perhaps I just need to get a new soundcard.
I used to copernic form my searches so Im not sure if htere is anything as good for Linux yet.
can someone please help in the quest to get some toones back on my computer
when it says only root (or whatever) it means equivalent of
Administrator in windows....type "su" ,it will ask for a password,
which you must have given during installation....try it....
erm.... but heres one for you, me being a complete and uter dumbass with Linux, where would I type .us?
Please dont flame me for this!!
After just seeing the KDE setup on Linux I realised that Windows is just over prices junk, only problem its its gonna take me a while to get used to Linux.
Assuming you went with Mandrake's default WM ---> KDE
The little old monochrome looking computer screen icon in your taskbar (actually called kicker) is what crashmeister is referring you to. And the command should look like this:
su -
Dont miss the dash. Then enter the password you gave during setup for "root".
