fsck - doesn't fix problem?

My computer prompted me to run fsck manually recently, so I did. It gave me a huge number of items to fix. I said "yes" to each and every one. It then says it has to restart fsck. OK... huge number of items to fix... yes to every one... restart again... huge number of items to fix... wait a minute, that looks familiar. I must be imagining things. yes to every one again... restart again... huge number of items to fix. Yep, it's repeating itself. Why isn't it fixing the problems? I'm running fsck as root, so it shouldn't need sudo, correct? What's going wrong with the check?

No to both. But would read only matter if I'm running as root?
