Question formatted hard drive doesn't show in Thunar

Hello folks;
I have a question which is unique enough for there to be no obvious solution through internet searching.

After formatting an external USB hard drive in GParted, the hard drive does not now show up in the file manager. Using terminal - lsblk the drive does show up as sdb/sdb2. There are no obvious errors in GParted and I've run a partition check there already.

Is there some other troubleshooting that I'm missing here?

Which filesystem did you put onto the USB hard drive?

Try the following command to see where we're at:

Code:
lsblk -l -o NAME,LABEL,FSTYPE,TYPE,PARTLABEL,PARTFLAGS,PARTTYPE,SIZE,MOUNTPOINT | sort -g -k1.4

drive specifications

NAME LABEL FSTYPE TYPE PARTLABEL PARTFLAGS PARTTYPE SIZE MOUNTPOINT
sda disk 465.8G
sdb disk 931.5G
sr0 rom 1024M
sda1 ext4 part 0x80 0x83 457.9G /
sdb2 Blank-partition ext4 part 0x83 909.2G /media/username/Blank-partition
sda5 swap part 0x82 7.9G [SWAP]

I believe this issue is resolved. Strange, before I posted this I had removed the drive and then plugged it back in with no change. But just now I plugged it in and Thunar recognizes it.

In either case Hydruga I thank you for the linux command which provides more info. This was very interesting.

GParted can be funny, has been weird for years. Cfdisk, or even better yet fdisk, are better choices. I have had no issues with KDE Partition Manager.

I believe GNOME Disks uses the same lib too and even though it was rare when I used it I also found it could be funny. Not funny haha either...

What file system did you format the partition to?

What is the output of fdisk -l? You may have to issue the command as root.

Be sure to surround the output of terminal commands, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button beneath the "compose post" window.

Nice hydrurga, perhaps amend the sort to "sort -V -k1,1" - seems more natural to me.

The system just needed to re read it to update the partition table.
