i have a dell dimension 4600 runing windows xp and linux mandrake 9.1 powerpack and after trying forever to get my bcm v.90 56k to work in mandrake i'v gave up on it and now i'm looking for a good external modem i'd like to know what brand will work or what i should get i'm gonna get one off ebay just need to know what i should buy or where i should buy it from

I wholeheartedly recommend you NOT buy a modem off Ebay, the same with Xbox's ect. Many flakey 'electronic' devices are for sale there. Sure, they work when you first boot, but after 'warm' up, flakey things happen. There are alot of 'not so honest' people willing to pawn off their bad luck on someone else. When it comes to overclocked CPU's, dropped Cameras, or anything else that can be abused but not show it to the naked eye, stay away.

Does that Zoom modem you have the Amazon link for need Linux drivers, or does it work right out of the box?

See also http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache...art=4&ie=UTF-8 , Drivers needed, well, not really in the same sense that you do need them for winmodems. Your generic out of the box linux should have all you need to at least get a ppp up and running. See all the howto's out there on ppp. You might be able to pick this modem up at your local Office Depot (so you can easily return it if needed). Now, using the other v.92 protocols, I just have personal experience, can someone pitch in, and give some hints about using a external modem with v.90 and v.92 protocols. Thanks, Dylan sends

Yes, you can take a look at http://www.pricewatch.com and search for 'External actiontec' and you'll see, $49.05 . Not bad, $67.89 for the Zoom modem. Any other recommendations out there for external modems?

froogle.google.com may have one listed to. I use that a lot. It has pictures.

I know this has been a while ago, but I took your advice and bought the Zoom modem off Amazon. Best decision I've made regarding getting on the web with Linux! Got the modem, connected it up and configured it today. SuSE detected it right away and I didn't need to install any drivers. I'm finally on the web with SuSE!! Thanx a bunch!
