Soundfont recommendations
Which soundfonts do you prefer for DosBox and ScummVM games? "Shan's Soundfont" (which IMHO sounds retro) and "Crisis" (which I have not yet tried) tend to get recommendations. But I want to hear _your_ opinions.
BTW, I've written a blog entry on using soundfonts with games linked against SDL_mixer (which includes Exult and all DOOM source ports):

EDIT: Tried Crisis General Midi, and so far it's my favorite.

Okay, I've made my decision.
WeedsGM3.
http://www.simpilot.net/~richnagel/#soundfonts
The guy who made it, Rich Nagel, has been promoting it pretty heavily on game forums (e.g.l for ScummvVM and DOOM). This is a good sign, as it means it was designed with gaming in mind.
Slightly better than Shan's, IMHO.
Prboom-Plus sounds fantastic with it. So does the Space Quest 3 MIDI I downloaded from Quest Studios.

I believe that this question now has correct answers:
Patch93's SC-55 soundfont. Information at:
Or:
SCC1 soundfont
Most games that were written to use General MIDI had their music composed on Rolands, so you want soundfonts that sound like Roland synths. You also want something that actually works properly with the FluidSynth backend that Linux game engines use. The SC-55 soundfont was tested with FluidSynth by its creator, and, well, the SCC1 one seems to sound fine in FluidSynth to me.

And anything that wasn't written for the Roland was probably written for either the Sound Blaster or something that sounds extremely similar. So use the SBLive soundfont:

I didn't pay attention to this for a while, and now I see that Roland's released an actual Sound Canvas VA software synth, and people are using it to get audio that's literally correct.
It's a Windows VST plugin, and the standard setup on both Linux and Windows seems to be to use Falcosoft Midiplayer ( http://falcosoft.hu/softwares.html) as a VST host to run it.
No, I haven't bought it.
But I did try out the VST for a Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth ( https://veg.by/en/projects/syxg50/), which is free. I've recorded a video that shows how to set it up with ScummVM.
https://youtu.be/vEpLutYAHaw
(It's pretty similar to the process to set these games up to play MIDI through Munt, if you've ever used that).
EDIT: I just tested the Yamaha VST with GZDOM (it lets you set the MIDI device to MIDI Through Port 0), and it sounds pretty similar to what I know the Sound Canvas sounded like. The first electronic drum hits in E1M8 are played with the same instruments. But they're less loud.

This post actually makes a pretty compelling argument that the best soundfont is GeneralUser GS if you have the sliders to make it work well with FluidSynth.
https://github.com/dosbox-staging/do...ent-2777637307
The documentation that tells you what to set for DOSBOX Staging and ScummVM:
https://github.com/mrbumpy409/Genera...tion/README.md
I've noticed that UZDOOM also lets you set them, but you have to access them by editing the ini file (they're not settable from the UI).
If you're using software that does not let you tweak those settings, then I'd still pick the Falcosoft soundfont. I've seen that most DOOM source ports default to having reverb and chorus turned off in their FluidSynth settings, though, and it's pretty obvious that you should turn them on for this soundfont.
