Why is it so difficult to reinstall RH9's Boot loader using the Linux Rescue mode?

I had to reinstall Windows today.

So I booted into RH9's CD, I loaded up the rescue mode. No matter what I did, I could not reinstall grub.

I ended up having to do it a different way. First I used my Slackware 8.1 CD to boot into my slackware drive (to install a boot loader temporally). Then I pondered, why couldn't I use my Slackware 8.1 CD to boot my RH partition, it did sort of... So that's how I reinstalled grub.

My question is, why is it hard to reinstall grub from within the RH9 Rescue mode? Isn't that what it is there for? I wouldn't want to use a CD that is not meant for RH9 to restore the red hat 9 boot loader.

What did you try exactly?

It can be as easy as running grub-install /dev/hda or whatever would be appropriate for your configuration.

Go into Red Hat's Linux Rescue mode from CD, but couldn't run grub properly because Red Hat mounted the partition at /mnt/sysimage.

Well considering that I DID reinstall grub onto the MBR some how, I am guessing that I already KNOW that.

so chroot /mnt/sysimage then run grub-install /dev/hda
works fine for me...

I *never* create a bootdisk, unless it's a headless machine.

headless = no screen attached to it, remote administration

In that case a kernel bootdisk can be a quick way to work around boot errors.

You can create a rescue CD that is exactly tailored to your individual system by using LifeBoat.

Hmm, I never did thank Bulliver for that information.

Uh thanks for the information.

Man that was late.

And no I don't create boot disks, why? Floppies suck. It's been months since the last time I used my Floppy drive.

yeah, typically i don't create boot disks either but i did this last time with RH 9 and its a good thing because i had to reinstall WinXP and it erased grub. but i guess i could have just as easily done a rescue with the install disc.
