I had a lot of problems with Mint. Reinstalled it twice in two weeks. Just got up and running again. Kind of scared to keep installing stuff.

Thanks for the replies.

Chris.
What do you mean "can't read the writing?".

Really? You want to turn this thread into another discussion about systemd?

273, this thread already has a pretty ugly, muddy and confused backstory.
i don't think it can get any worse.

i got a mac and an iphone

you save tons of time getting a lot of caps with NO setup.

with a mac you can dual boot with the bonus: it OS/X supports all hardware and is licensed. yet booting to win10 is supported.

i have ssh working between them. El Capitan is slightly BSDish, has a small to medium unix (ie, bash) installed. X11.app is no longer pre-isntalled but available.

you will loose time on migration (not required) or interoperability (assuming your linux or bleeding edge BSD - you'd need to make emulators or dual boots all that - which takes time)

if you want a sexy thing that works with your iphone, has free Xcode to make apps for iphone or imac or ???, get one. used, refurb - even new prices are competitive with PC if you go to (ie microcenter) and compare component by component what is in the thing: SAME PRICE

if you want andriod - well dont get one then i'm unsure of iMac HCL for linux or BSD (there is some compat)

it's more like pick your poison - and that depends wholey on what the device is being used for. mine is for "connectivity and social" as my linux box is fine already where i want it for (some years till next update)

that's my ad, good luck!

in other words - it's not worth the time and money (frustration) to try to get one to "be the other". they are both good for what they do.

as far as look-alikes. obviously android looks alike iphone, tablets markets same thing, meanwhile iMac is moving toward a more iPad'ish interface and capabilities - touch screen aside (it uses magic mouse instead).

there is nothing special about the desktop - it's the widgets and what features and tricks the desktop does and how well integreated they are that make any difference. for example: on mac you use mostly same keys in (x terminal) as any other apps. you can search forward and back and do other tricks unavailable in straight xterm312. cut and paste works better. but it's not xterm either. but if you want xterm - it will run on apple bsd if you compile it or find it in macports.

+1

Theming something up to ape something else is pretty pointless... the end result will look similar but won't work the same and ultimately won't be the same. Much like the appalling windows xp style themes for some window managers.
