QTerminal doesn't accept input from keyboard after a while

Hello all,

I am a long time QTerminal terminal emulator user. I used it for over 4 years on Linux Fedora with LXDE as DE with no problem. Recently I did a fresh install of latest Fedora Workstation edition (Fedora 34) GNOME being the default DE. I installed QTerminal with GNOME software. Its version is 0.16.0. I always have multiple tabs open on it and connect to other remote servers and switch between tabs. After using it for a while QTerminal stops accepting ANY input from the keyboard. And, when I turn the "show tab bar" on and off it starts working fine again for a while and then stops accepting input from keyboard again. The mouse and touchpad work fine. It is only the keyboard input.

I hope I was clear on the issue I am experiencing.

Thank you.

First of all you'll need to narrow it down.
Does it happen with other terminal emulators?
Does it happen with other shells?
Does it happen with local ttys only? (BTW, how do you make these remote connections)

Try starting qterminal from another terminal (xterm), to see some diagnostic output.
Look into the journal, maybe something relevant got logged.
Apply verbose switches to all apps/commands involved.

My first thought was: it is just a simple focus switch/change, but that is only a wild guess.

Just a shot in the dark. Their issue tracker lists quite a few issues related to Wayland. Most of them are already closed in Git, but 0.16.0 was released almost a year ago, so some may still have been present in that version. Do you experience the same problems in X11 sessions?

On a related note, issue #497 sounds suspiciously similar to yours.

You might be right on that. Last night after I posted the thread I noticed everytime I switched to Firefox browser and then back to the QTerminal, QTerminal stopped working. And when I click the "show tab bar" and then unclick it, QTerminal started working fine again.

To ondoho:
I connect to remote servers using ssh. But I don't think the hanging on QTerminal has anything to do with it because I use QTerminal exactly the way I used it on Fedora 28 LXDE for years without any problems at all.
I have GNOME Terminal too but I didn't notice any hangs on it. I don't think it happens with other emulators.
I only use bash shell.
This is what I get when I start QTerminal with GNOME Terminal (and xterm)
Quote:
$ qterminal
QSocketNotifier: Can only be used with threads started with QThread
QDir::exists: Empty or null file name
QDir::exists: Empty or null file name
BTW, there is also a QTerminal Drop Down in the applications menu. When I click on it I get error:
QTerminal quit unexpectedly. The application encountered a problem and could not continue.

ok, so you can check how QTerminal works if firefox was not started at all.

Fedora GNOME uses wayland afaik, so you should consider post #4.

hi,

I followed the instructions in this page and changed my default Windowing system to Xorg and the QTerminal seems to be working fine now.

Thanks everyone. Problem solved.
