[SOLVED] Can't always switch user account in Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)

Hello,

Since I upgraded to ubuntu 13.10 (from 13.04), it's not always possible to switch users:
a black screen and an arrow are displayed when an attempt is made to switch from a logged-in account to another one.

My desktop is Unity. I haven't installed another one.
The display manager is lightdm.

The system does not freeze, it's possible to escape by going into a console with Ctrl-alt-F1
and kill the current session to return to the login screen. Still, it's annoying.

I rebooted after removing .Xauthority files, including /var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority,
but the problem comes back after a day or two.

Do you have any idea what's going on ?

For better understanding: You are experiencing this issue with all accounts or only some of them?
Can you create one more and check if you're able to switch to it?

Yes, there are 2 user accounts and the problem happens when I try to switch from user1 to user2 or from user2 to user1.

I created user3 and I can't switch from user3 to user1 or vice versa.

Can you try logging in with unity 2d to check if the hang persists?

Is it worth trying XFCE ?

- I did not have to wait for a day after reboot before seeing the hang again.
It happened after the machine had been suspended for a few minutes.

Someone else thinks it is a screensaver issue and Launchpad has this Saucy bug:

I've asked you about unity2d to make sure the hang is not related to 3rd acceleration.
AFAIK, unity will enable compiz by default, so the only way is to boot to different environment to check if the problem is still there.
XFCE is fair enough IMHO, just for test.

I downgraded gnome-screensaver to 3.6.1-0ubuntu6.
We'll see what happens.
If the hang comes back I will probably try XFCE desktop.

Another solution is to boot up a live cd with 13.10 and reproduce all the steps causing the hang. If it doesn't happen, that means your issue is related to the upgrade, so doing a fresh install may solve it.
(when creating a live cd, make sure to preserve some empty space for the config/temp files that are being saved on the device)

The problem came back.

Interesting: I installed XFCE4 (xfce4 package, not xubuntu-desktop) with xfswitch-plugin.
The same problem happens with 'switch user'. What does it suggest ?

Lock/unlock with xscreensaver does work.

I tried to replace lightdm (display manager) with gdm, as suggested here:

It seems to go fine.

I haven't tried the development version of lightdm yet.

I don't understand why you want to run Ubuntu 13.10 while you have already a stable lts 14.04 version that is more stable then 13.10!
