Alt-tabbing in Fluxbox. Want to change how that looks.

When I alt-tab, the entire window of each application is drawn with every tab. This jams up when my CPU usage is high.

Can I make Fluxbox just show the window border until alt is released (like in [Etch] Gnome)? Window moving is already "transparent" in this way.

alt-tab calls a function :NextWindow. I'm lookin around online but i can't find anything more about it. So... peek at it in your system. I don't know where it is, but below is some theme styles you may be able to patch into your code. Or, you could patch the gnome Nextwindow into your fluxbox.

http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docbo...s.html#AEN1633

Fluxbox does state that:

"This behaviour is not a bug. It occurs because of the nature of outline window moving.

Long version:
Outline moving works by drawing a rectangle of inverted pixels around a window. When you move the mouse, the old rectange is erased (by inverting the pixels again) and a new one drawn. Fluxbox grabs the display to freeze all the applications display windows. If it doesn't to this, then window changes can occur which change bits of the rectangles, ultimately leaving sections of rectangle randomly around the screen.

All window managers that offer outline moving need to enforce the same rule so that the display doesn't become messy with rectange fragments during or after the move operation. If you find one that doesn't let us know "

And alt-tab is a focus on a window, so with fluxbox it will do that. Basically, I don't think that the fact it's redrawing your windows is reason to believe that changing it will make your cpu faster. But if you'd like to, here's a doc I found...

http://old.fluxbox.org/docs/en/newdoc.keybindings.php

Spend some time with it, you'll prolly get somewhere. Just out of curiosity, why stick with flux? lowmem? And, what debian are you using?

Thanks much for the help. I had always assumed that a window didn't get focus until 'alt' was released, but that assumption was based on nothing.

I found out about the .fluxbox/keys file looking for information on another window manager. The ability to quickly create keybindings (that don't interfere w/vim) and to easily modify those keybindings as I progress through projects is enough to keep me using Fluxbox. Thin and attractive titlebars are a nice bonus.

I have used Etch in the past with Gnome.
