O'Reilly Books web store closes

Quote:
This week, O’Reilly Media stopped retailing books directly on our ecommerce store.

We still sell them through Amazon or your favorite retailer.

Bad news. I chose to buy from their web store because it was all-formats, DRM-free, and free from vendor lock-in.

O'Reilly took the mystery out of CSS and MySQL for me.

Bummer, O’Reilly published exceptionally good technical books.

there are two important things to note:
  • We are absolutely continuing to publish the top-quality books that are important to the communities we serve.
  • We still sell them through Amazon or your favorite retailer.

I just gave away 80% of my O'Reilly publications.

Their web store was my favorite retailer! Every purchase included unrestricted downloads of a DRM-free EPUB, a DRM-free PDF, and a DRM-free Mobi file.

Alas, I'm pretty sure that their days are numbered as a company. Today, you can get information from the Internet for free. Retailers stock only a very small section of computer books. (Paper recyclers are very disappointed.)

I've never dealt with ebooks.com, but they're apparently carrying DRM-free O'Reilly books.

Let's get prepared for what comes next concerning DRM obligation / user dependencies & proprietary format user locking.
