Please let this happen everywhere!

I wish I lived in California right now! And I've run out of my New Year's pot.

I've never smoked pot for the same reason that I've never smoked tobacco. I think smoking is a filthy habit that pollutes other people's air and I'd rather that people didn't do it anywhere near me. But I used to think that marijuana was completely harmless whereas I now know that it is more complicated than that.

I recognise that most people can safely smoke a few joints per week, but there are a few people for whom marijuana is psychologically addictive and harmful to their mental stability. I know about this because one of my friends, a lovely bubbly girl with bipolar tendencies, went completely off the rails after becoming hooked on a stronger version of the resin than she was used to. She became violent and aggressive, acquired a police record (which is going to dog her for years to come), exploited everyone she could financially, and eventually crashed out so badly that she had to be hospitalised. She's now in recovery and has accepted that she has an intolerance for the weed and should not partake of it in any form.

I can tell you this here because neither she nor anyone else who knows her is likely to be an LQ reader. The point is that such people do exist and (if my friend is in any way typical) they are quite incapable of understanding that marijuana is harming them until they reach rock bottom.

I accept that there is a strong argument for legalising marijuana, namely that it gets organised crime out of the loop. However young people do need better education about the risks. A couple of days ago I saw a picture of a shop in California which is now selling cannabis candy. I can't think of a better way of encouraging casual experimentation, especially by children.

regardless of the nonsense being purported as medicinal, Marijuana is toxic to the liver and one joint is approximately the equivalent of 40 cigarettes regarding the damage to the Liver, Heart and Lungs. Smoking pot will destroy the liver.

I'd guess lungs get it worse? But, we can eat or turn to vapor.

The real danger from marijuana highs are it makes you hungry
In animal studies, animals experience sugar like a drug and can become sugar-addicted. ... Sugar stimulates brain pathways just as an opioid would, and sugar has been found to be habit-forming in people. Cravings induced by sugar are comparable to those induced by addictive drugs like cocaine and nicotine .
, http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blo...food-additives, https://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/31/o...e-on-food.html &c... your local grocery store and the [$]FDA[/$] will kill you as fast as smoking; unless you're perfect!

Liver gets it the worst. Regarding other consumption I'm not sure...The ancient Chinese used it for over 10,000 years as hemp, mainly for rope, bowstrings, paper, clothing etc... It was used at times for medicinal purposes but it had to be balanced with other herbs to cancel out its negative affect on the liver. This, however, did not last long as other herbs/formulas were used that were considered safer then Marijuana. Marijuana became well known after its introduction to India, where it took on significance for religious communities and other purposes, from India it spread to other countries.

Regardless, how it is used in the west and in modern times is not safe, buyer or in this case user beware.

Hemp, should be cultivated in every country for its use as a natural fiber for clothing etc...

In England in the 16th century, it was compulsory for people to grow hemp in their gardens! The reason was simple: the navy had an unending demand for hemp for ropes. Of course, this type of hemp was tall and unbranched with only one flowering head, so it wouldn't have produced much cannabis.

It's legal now in Oz!

All seeds are good for you, except for a few that are poisonous. Eating hemp seed is no different from eating linseed or sunflower seeds. But the closest parallel is probably to poppy seed. I don't know if the English eat poppy seed (except for a sprinkling on rolls), but it's a common cake filling in central Europe. It's called mohn in German. My mother used to fill strudels with it. The green head of the poppy produces opiates, but there are none in the seeds, which is why they are legal.

ChuangTzu 01-03-2018 05:25 PM

that poppy seed filling sounds delicious.

Lotus seeds are great as well, especially slightly sweetened in steam buns or in rice porridge, etc...
