I believe if everybody tried, they could do w/o windows. I came to linux, and i found alternative software for the things i use, majority of software windows has, there is a alternative app for linux. why not use a stable os(gnu/linux) and get a great piece of software?

Linux is LOVE and I will love the Linux forever!!!!!micro$oft is crap ,wake up people Linux is 4th generation OS!LONG LIVE LINUX!!!

mikshaw 12-18-2003 01:45 PM

There're a lot of strong feelings in this thread....

I *could* live without Windows, but I really don't want to. I think it's a decent operating system and it has its uses. Even if I had everything I could possibly want to use on Linux, I'd still probably have a windows machine, even if it were only in vmware, just to mess around with occasionally.

I only use windows for kazaa K++

enyawix 12-29-2003 10:24 PM

Kazaa is no reason to run windows

Kazaa is no reason to run windows. Kazaa lite will run in wine under Linux. Kazaa litehas no spy ware that I know of unlike kazaa. Linux also has quite a few p2p programs also like ML Dondey. Go Linux if that is all you use windows for. for help join #linuxfriends on freenode. I can give the class on under ground down loading from hell. I am sorry but i will not post that type of info here.

THEHERO 01-01-2004 03:17 PM

i have tried other programs but i like kazaa k++ edition. It is hard to find it even for windows. It is kind of funny that kazaa is trying to stop it for copyright infringement.

Ha ha, ha... In this statement lies the core of the reason why the whole "Open Source OS" thing is a bunch of nonsense.

Eventually... you WILL pay for it!

Folks kill me when they actually believe that Open Source/Linux etc is the answer to not paying for software! Ha, ha, ha, what a crock of sh|t.

ANYONE who does work... wants to, and should be paid for it!

Plain and simple. Sure... at this point and time, folks are willing to GIVE AWAY their linux based software... but eventually, once they get enough market penetration... WATCH OUT... you will be screwed by them, moreso than Microsoft ever has.... Ha, ha, ha, ha...... whew!

Gaming On Windows > Gaming On Linux >> Gaming on Mac

Since I'm addicted to Unreal Tournament (1), (2003), (2004 soon), I don't have problems with gaming. Because they all except UT GOTY support linux. I also patched up my UT GOTY so I can play in Linux with no trouble.

And about Windows. The only reason I use windows is when I have to run programs that I can't use in Linux. Using something like wine is just calling for trouble that you wouldn't get out for weeks.

And that's why I dual boot..

First box - Windows 98SE/MDK9.2
Second box- Windows XP/MDK9.2

I'm all happy..... :)

Wine is very difficult to use for me. I have not gotten KaZaa Lite to run on it and only the most basic applications like Notepad work.

yes, I have no problems paying for my slack CD set shipped to my home...since I know how much work it is to assemble your own linux system from scratch...err...source...I also haven't got any problems paying for a decent book/manual ...of course i could just download it...but I LIKE TO SUPPORT it

moron. troll. sorry mods...
you don't have to pay for GPL'ed software to use it...
guess what. i didn't pay for software...I payed for a service....namely assembling a linux system, burning it to CD's and shipping it to me...

true. but the GNU/Linux system and almost every fine piece of software thats available for our platform of choice was made by a bunch of people who didn't see it as there WORK but more as a HOBBY and wanted it to be FREE of charge.
and they put a lot of love into it too ^^

so...there will be commercial sofware for linux as there is for winblow$ at the momment ? in which way will this screw us you silly little...^^
the software I currently use at work is (except for one program) GPL'd, thus, it will continue to be available as source...
and if the specific team thats mainly developinging it has no further intends to develop it....I got the source and I can (legally) hack it in any way I want to and improve it...
haha...whew...why am I replying to a troll ? ^ ^

I am run Kazaa lite on my gentoo box for a while, but I do not like P2P as much a downloading off irc. I do not get what all the fuss is all about. I use Linux because it saves me tons of money. To get every thing I have in windows I would have to spend thousands.

Just look at M$ Office. I will admit M$ office is nice but it is not worth the money. Excel has to be one of the best spread sheets I have ever used. Word needs lots of work. The grammar check is not fit for college Laval work. The M$ spell checker is fine for most people, but often I will come up with words and Word will have no idea what I mean. The spell checker is not as nice as Aspell. I hate Power Point. I have not tried to rest of office so I can not comment.

i always use windows for playing movies, games, and some multimedia work...the rest i prefer using linux to do it especially programming.

enyawix 01-01-2004 09:33 PM

Xine has good with its defaults but will out performance any windows movie player with a little tweaking. I do not what to turn this into a Xine how to. The term "multimedia work" can be many things. Say what you mean by "multimedia work" and I will comment.

detpenguin 01-01-2004 11:24 PM

i dual boot XP with SuSE...i'm still so new to linux it's nice to have xp to fall back on when i need to do something fast...eventually i'll lose xp tho...one day. it took me awhile to learn windows, i suspect it's gonna take me awhile to be comfortable with linux.

oopicmaster 01-02-2004 12:44 AM

Currently Linux is cool and free because thats the only way it could get market penetration. Linux is now, what Microsoft was in its beginning. Never underestimate human greed. Once a particular Linux distribution has achieved the market penetration required to hook people... you WILL see a change. Believe me... the folks who are writing "Free" software, are just as greedy as Bill Gates.
