I do live without Windows. I was looking for a notebook, my first PC, with a view to installing Linux on it. I was resigned to having to buy Windows with it, and then found a company (www.eurosimm.co.uk) that was selling notebooks with no OS installed! What the hell, take a risk, I thought, and bought it. My notebook is 100% pure uncontaminated Linux.

I have been using linux for a little over a month now and I never want to back to windows ever again. I have to go back to windows once a while for certain things because I just don't enough about linux right now, but I am striving for the day where I can live without windows, and I know that day will come. Cause Windows blows!!

Linux is great, but what about friends and relatives?

I thought about posting this in the 'Linux is great, but can you live without windows' thread, but perhaps it should be its own thread.

I imagine a lot of the people who switch to Linux are people who really like computers and are thrilled by the increased control and power Linux gives them. These sorts of people also tend to be the ones that friends and relatives turn to with computer questions.

If you've switched to Linux, do you still try and help friends and relatives with windows trouble? Or do you say "Sorry, don't use it, don't help with it, don't encourage others to use it. If you switch to Linux and have a problem I'll be happy to help you with it."

Personally I still try and be helpful if I can, but not so great with stuff that's emerged since I switched, like the need for firewalls on desktop computers, I wouldn't have a clue what to recommend. Have managed to delight a couple of windows users though by pointing them towards mozilla, something they didn't know about.

I still give help on Windows. As far as firewalls go, I used to recommend ZoneAlarm as the best. Thing is, of late, I have found it gives problems in XP and 200 (at least it does on my boxes) so I now recommend Kerio Personal Firewall.

Best advice though is to turn off the the inbuilt XP firewall and get hold of either a third party software firewall or a hardware firewall. I also recommend Smoothwall for those with a spare pc and who feel adventurous.

And I always recommend Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird.

If your contributing to an existing thread or get any ideas from it, keep it in the ongoing same thread as that's where its more suitable as we don't need two discussions going on in different locations, etc.

Your threads if you have not noticed thus far is now merged in the original thread where it belongs.

To the moderator: Fine, it's your call. I'm more of a splitter than a lumper and it just feels a bit off topic within this thread. But if you're ok with some meandering, that's cool.

It doesn't have to be exactly on topic. If you read this thread and wanted to post something in response to it, reply to the thread, don't refer to it in a new thread your creating, it just causes confusion when members read and then possibly have to go read the other thread to relate to it, etc.

I support several people using Win 98SE, and have done so for years. However, since I have been using Linux (RH9) I take every opportunity to promote Linux as a replacement. So far I have only managed to convince one of these people to try Linux and she loves it. But as for her living without Windows, that's a long way off, just as it is for me.

Kjetil4455 11-19-2003 07:16 AM

depends. I? nope.. i'm a gamer :(

you? sure hope so :D i'd get rid of WinDoze anytime if there came a superb WINE.

bentman78 11-19-2003 07:49 AM

I'd have to admit that I game, I love gaming. I also like a stable OS.
I had windows ME, and it plain sucked. I bought some new components and built a new one on XP, and my gaming experience is fantastic. Fact is gaming in Windows is more mature. For those who say "Well I don't game", that's fine for you, but there is plenty that do. I don't know about anyone else but Call of Duty, MOHAA and SOF 2 are fantastic. And I can't get along without Black and White. Also I use Dreamweaver/Photoshop for my pernsonal site, as well as hard coding.

I also use M$ Office quite a bit, and it is feature rich. I do use Open Office quite a bit, however just I find M$ Office has a little bit better features.

I am a Windows/*Nix admin, and I have to say, Windows 2k is a pretty decent OS simply because of AD. I have toyed with 2003, and it's not bad either. I manage a pretty large AD domain/Exchange site with thousands of users along with other windows servers using MS SQL and stuff. I can honestly say i haven't had a server hang up on me once (however our helpdesk can say different soty about the clients computers). If properly taken care of and patched, 2k will go for a while. However I have had Windows Print Servers and certain app servers hang up (but never crash and lose data). I'd never run databases on Windows, or firewalls for that matter. They use IIS here (I'd wish they'd go Apache/Tomcat, IIS has to many holes, and it's slow) and use a Java platform instead of ASP (Visual Basic sucks). But my bosses get easily infleuenced by sales people and think somehow a web portal system with an ASP/MS SQL platform is better then a Java/Oracle one.

I couldn't live without windows, or Linux. I love the freedom of Linux. I like the fact I can use Linux as my SMTP gateway with Qmail, and not worry about security as with Windows. But I also like that I can push out a policy on the domain and effect every user with a patch or software with the simplicity AD gives me. I like the both OSes, they noth have a place.

I have a single WinXp machine running a video capture utility and thats it. I would turn it on in the morning capture a few shows and off at night. This morning however it kept responding no boot device found. What no boot device. Long story short I had to reload the !^%$*@ machine.
Their was nothing wrong with the hard drive just a missing boot sector. If it weren't for the video capture I would be windows free BELIEVE ME. As for games the 200 or so that are installed easier than any windows machine is plenty for the kids. The recent release of winex I've even added about 70 more to the games menus. So I really really really really wish somebody would come out with a good video to DVD capture software for linux.

DavidPhillips 11-24-2003 04:26 PM

Mplayer is probably the best thing for capturing video around.

Living w/o win?
I would if people will stop asking me to develop custom sw for win!
