I've never gotten a virus with Windows. I've never even gotten any slowdowns. Never got a BSOD either. I just use common sense really. Windows does require much more maintenance than a Linux system, however.

since 2007 until 2011 i've ran windows pc's with or without antivirues and got no virus whatsoever.
epic win

It is opposite/other way around. Windows machine requires less maintenance, while with linux machine you normally need to spend a LOT of time simply to learn tools, commands and tricks. The time you need to learn linux basics is comparable with few years worth of windows maintenance time. Maintenance time is not the strong point of linux system - linux is about having more power or more ways to do something. As a result, you'll be always wasting time reading documentation, tweaking something, compiling something or participating in community discussions.

That's only if folks are new to linux. I've been using linux for a long time and I don't spend alot of time figuring things out and maintenance is minimal at least for me.

Like I said in the past, EXPERIENCE makes the difference...

I still think that linux system requires much more time to maintain than windows system. (it is my final opinion, and it won't be changed).
On linux, source code access gives more possibilities, tools give more power, but it all costs time, and sometimes a lot of it, and the fact that linux OS is not as widely adopted makes you waste even more time checking for compatible hardware, for example. It is also very easy to get carried away and waste days tweaking something (I heard that some gentoo users are prone to that (compilation optimization flags, etc), but it might be just a rumor). For many people, amount of time required to spend might not be worth the effort.

I prefer to spend my life doing something other than becoming a computer expert (for free) in tech/software that will be dead within 25..50 years. I've already spent a lot of time with computers, and right now (when I already got a lot of skill in multiple computer-related areas) I think it might be wiser to do something else instead. Read this article. It isn't written by me, but I share mostly (except windows bashing) same opinion.

yes windows rulz.

i'm going to be a windows fanboy since i liked windows xp, vista and 7. they're simple, easy and i don't think they are any slower than linux. i still like linux alot for live cds though (beat that windows)
anyawys, i'm pretty surprised that even windows 7 in a virtual machine on the same computer is snappier with 256 ram than ubuntu 10.10 on the same machine with 1 GB RAM.

i''m sooo surprised. :\

windows rulz.

It seems the windows folks forget about the reinstalls, time spent running anti-virus programs, having to reboot when it gets slow and lots of other things I am forgetting.

I just built this rig so it is a fresh install of Linux, went from 32 bit to 64 bit, but on my old rig, Gentoo Linux was installed back in 2003. That install, is still there. It's fairly up to date and the OS is still working great.

My brother and several friends run windows and it takes time and effort to keep them running. You got to keep the anti-virus up to date, be careful opening emails, watch what sites you visit and reboot at least once a day.

What's funny about all this, windows is why I got out of the computer business. When windows 3.1 came out, I quit. I worked for a magazine distributor and a insurance company after that. No computers required for either one. I wouldn't install windows if it was given to me. Now for Linux, I'll download it and install it. Gentoo even!!

Given that people claim Gentoo is so hard to deal with, I still much prefer Linux over windows.

:D :D

silvyus_06 03-03-2011 12:40 PM

ok. as you guys say.
windows for me hasn't failed.
i started keeping this windows 7 online all the time (powered on) and IMO it's not slowish. hell, it's even faster than ubuntu.

if you make a monthly restore point viruses arent such a problem either.

now, i dont get the taking care what emails you open part.
i opened all my emails that i received either on a web mail or on thunderbird. no virus.

seriously, even vista didn't get sluggish after 1 week of only standby (power on from standby)

and that vista OEM install i had lasted 2 years without a reinstall.
and would have lasted more if i wasn't so stupid to try to delete the windows folder and pretty much everything in c: except users(my data)

i got the partition corrupt haha

Though I was or won't ever be a Windows fanboy, still I don't seem to agree on the points where people say that windows breaks more often than Linux.
I guess it's the reverse case. Ain't there are 1000's of Ubuntu users out there who cry over how on earth their install crashed or hung up someday for no reason or after a small update or after a distro upgrade. With my 5-6 years with Win-XP I have never encountered breaking down of whole system or even my taskbar(beat it Linux!) because of an update, hah!, I have still to see a breakage in the Win 7 system I use at the work place, it stays up for days.

The only thing I hated about Windows was/is/will be the poor security system and virus vs. Anti-fu*kin-virus play.
I'm a Linux user, follower and addict, but that doesn't give me a right to judge Windows so poorly as it's not, nothing here is perfect, I have still to see a perfect stable Desktop Linux distro (the closest so far is Mint FOR ME*).

***getting ready to get some good bashes now ;)

Well, Gentoo works fine for me. The biggest crash I had was when the power supply burnt out on my old rig. It stunk too. That electronic smoke is as bad as a skunk.

One thing I like about Linux is this, I can boot a USB stick or CD and fix Linux. If windows breaks, re-install or go back a while if you are lucky. I have seen that fail too. That go back thingy don't always help.

:D :D

and that is why Linux > Windows.

You can change that, actually: just grab the *.msstyles theme from Windows (XP and lower; Vista/7's Aero most definitely won't work ;)) and select that as your Wine theme in the "Desktop Integration" tab in winecfg. Check here for more info.
