Apple face ID: does it work?

Hackers working for a security firm called Bkav claim to have beaten the face ID system on the iPhone X by using a 3D-printed mask. Apple claim that the iPhone X cannot be fooled by masks.

Obviously someone is lying. Who do you think it is?

We've also seen videos of people's children unlocking their phones if the facial structure is similar enough. Obviously, Apples testing was...insufficient. But then, that's par for the course for Apple.

Absent some *significant* differences/improvements, I'm probably terminal with iPhone 7 and iPad 2017, both of which I'm very happy with. I'm not seeing anything worth the money in the 8 or the X.

apple of course.
it's the old song of security vs. convenience.
we recently had a similar thread about fingerprints - basically a good and secure technology, but to make it useable for consumers, error tolerance must be large so it "clicks" on first try, and not only after 5 attempts from different angles, cleaning the lense etc.

Wasn't it Microsoft that first used face recognition for portable devices?

No but it just occurred to me that I'd seen an ad of someone logging into a laptop with his face and I wondered if Apple had pinched M$'s idea. It wouldn't necessarily be the same technology; there must be a number of different algorithms for recognising faces. But once it existed, Apple would probably have to do something like that to keep up. I remember wondering then how safe it was.

Apple is the first to admit that they don't come up with ideas. They take existing ideas and improve upon them.

Perhaps you have become so enamored to "ubiquitous, intrusive technology" that you are not disturbed by the thought of a camera picking your face out of a crowd at Times Square and instantly linking it to an on-line dossier of virtually everything about you ... but, I still do.

Why anyone would put serious money into a smartphone now is beyond me. Everything today is based on 4G network technology, and 5G tech will be rolled out for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Why buy a new phone now when you can just nurse your old one along (most people) and then get a new standard?

Naw. I got Border Patrol Check Point cameras for that. " Why so serious?"

Crap. My android phone won't pick up my thumbprint again. Them calluses on my fingers are giving tech a hissy fit.

Sold my Iphone. It was crapola when it came to kum-baya.
