Short Story Title: Karate Compromise

Arjun is a very nice person living in Montreal, Quebec. He has had many jobs but most of what he knew is no longer
needed by industry, society. Hence he spends his time learning different things, helping folks in small ways where possible.

Arjun is also a very special character. He has lots of bad luck. He also loves to give excuses and complain. So folks literally run from him. Once folks are tired of listening to his excuses and ask him to stop, he tells them to go and simply screw themselves nicely.

Arjun has a parrot called Bobby that speaks a few phrases of his Mother Tounge. Bobby loves it when Arjun is at home.
Bobby doesn't like Arjun from being absent from home for long, bites him viciously, draws blood when he is away from home
the whole day and returns at night. Bobby also doesn't want other humans coming to their apartment, other than maintenance
workers etc., for brief periods. Bobby tells Arjun to simple tell other humans who get close to him to go and completely
screw themselves. When Arjun does this and reports it to Bobby, Bobby rewards him with heaps of kisses and love bombs.
So this works out ok for both of them.

In as long as one doesn't hurt others, steal, break things etc., one can do as they please. One big requirement in Quebec is the French Language, Quebec is a French Province. So the Government paid Arjun to learn French for a year, now Arjun is ok in French. Without a job Arjun is bored. So he calls up different folks, agencies etc., and gives excuses, complains, until they turn like cherry red.

Now to add to these excuses in person, Arjun is also an IT guy and is familiar with old computers, linux. He uses this knowledge to use these old computers to generate even more excuses, complaints. This works out very well.

The Government is forced to find a solution, they give Arjun a creative writing therapist 25 years of age. Her name is Zeyna.
After a few sessions, Arjun tries to convince Zeyna that her parents are boring and can't have sex. This is even tho Zeyna's Dad gave her Mom many happy sexy times resulting in the birth of Zeyna. Zeyna tells Arjun, look I am here and grown, if my Dad kept on giving excuses like you I would have very likely not been born. Hence, stop giving excuses and start writing some stories to share your life, feelings. Then all will think you are great. So Arjun tries to gather ideas from
experiences around his life to start writing stories.

Arjun is referred to a local agency that helps folks with personal issues. Arjun has very poor social skills, if he gets more friends and turns people friendly then his excuses and frustration will reduce greatly. As a part of
character development, this agency gives Arjun one free Karate class each week.

One of the Instructors assigned to teach Arjun, happens to be a woman named Melony. Melony has over 15 years of experience in the Martial Arts. She is friendly but a firm personality. She has big boobs and shakes them sometimes to intimidate folks.
Melony is another very interesting character actually. She loves to compete. So she goes to New York for Karate Competition, kicks the ass of some men and wins a trophy. Then she goes to Miami and does the same. Needless to say she has a show case filled with her trophies, medals in her home. Whenever she is in Montreal, she breaks boards to demonstrate her Karate skills. Due to these demonstrations, all men simply flee from Melony as they don't want any confrontation. This makes Melony feel very lonely and she cries in Karate class: Boo hoo hoo, no one loves me. Arjun feels very sorry for Melony
and chats with her after class. Melony likes Arjun as he is willing to listen to her. So henceforth they both decide to spend Friday nights at Arjun's place.

Here is a significant info., Melony is much stronger and bigger than Arjun, hence if they both try to have many happy sexy times together, then Arjun feels rightly that he will die in the process. So they have to remain best of friends.

For the first friday night together, Arjun provides the Samosas and Melony brings in some fries. Then Melony starts first and keeps on complaining why men avoid her. Then Arjun starts with his excuses of why he has not yet installed Arch Linux on his old computers. Melony has to listen to due to their sweet compromise, she is happy that atleast she has not been rejected. So after these excuses continue back and forth for an hour, they both kiss each other, hug and then go to sleep. The same continues each week after this. With time, Melony and Arjun get closer and live happily together ever after.

That sounds like a film called "Her". A man falls in love with his AI assistant (think Siri or Alexa).

Tip on how to install Xiphos on slacko based puppy Linux from a buddy. Haven't tried it myself yet but worth looking into.

Ok, you go to the online Ubuntu repositories and download each .deb necessary to install Xiphos and have it running. Then you extract each .deb and inside of the .deb you will see the filesystem folders, and inside of each folder the program itself or the depends, or whatever else is necessary. You take what is in those folders and put them in to the matching folders in your actual Slacko filesystem. Then you will have installed Xiphos without having to compile it.
I have done it many times when using Slacko.

I was very wrong here inregards to the man loving an OS. The above article gave me an idea. If someone is lonely, feels vulnerable, poor, has health issues etc., and wants a companion and if a virtual software can fulfill that need, then it must be ok. Better this than face other issues.

Thanks to support by wpeckham here, this time I kept opening the box my oil painting was in every few days to release the
buildup of gases. Made sure to keep my face a bit far away as I did this. Now this oil painting has dried in 3 weeks itself !!!
Maybe it even dried earlier but I didn't realize it. Have kept it out, it will dry further with time, but now it is ok for the touch.

Now I can do another one whenever I feel like it.

Yes. It is not easy. I played with primitive AI back when MS-DOS 5 was new. It was not easy.
Far better/easier now. Part of what makes it easier are faster processors and a LOT more memory. You CAN do it on old hardware, but you may find it painful.

Short Story: Mr. Raju - The most lonely man in Quebec.

Mr. Raju is like an old clock radio that only picks up few radio stations, very hard to tune and also
needs to be banged on the right side to start it. So, naturally all avoided him as he made folks
feel sucky and down in a few minutes. Mr. Raju also is not working, no one wanted his skills and expertise
that are out of touch with time, all this made him feel very lonely and empty. So he had to come
up with a plan to chat with people. He met a widow from Australia on the internet, she taught him how
to read bus and time tables of remote places to overcome loneliness. However, Mr. Raju decided he can do better than that.

Mr. Raju started dumpster diving in Montreal downtown where he lived. The first time it was a bit strange but then
he quickly picked it up. He collected many used items from frying pans to old computer parts.
He will keep a few of them in his bag and walk around. If he saw any can collectors, or anyone
else seeming needy on the road, he will walk up to them and offer one of his special used gifts.
Now if the subject refuses the gift, he will have at least 25 reasons why his gift will be useful
and brighten the day of the subject. If the subject still refuses the gift, then Mr. Raju will bring out
another gift from his bag and try to get subject to accept this at least. Now who can fight with a person
that gives gifts ?!! Excepting these are gifts that folks prefer to avoid.

Imagine you were a manager or an engineer walking to catch the metro, Mr. Raju was familiar with you,
he walks up to you, gives you a used rusty frying pain, convinces you that you need it. You are in a rush
can't argue, so you decide to take the heavy frying pan to make Mr. Raju happy. Then you carry it
along with you, in the metro and to work. You can't hide this thing as it is big. A young educated man,
carrying an old rusty used frying pan looks super odd to the metro riders and professional workers.
They wonder what's up with this guy suddenly. Hence, Mr. Raju created some odd waves in
Montreal downtown this way.

The rule of dumpster diving is that the more ickyness you can handle, the more stuff you will find.
Mr. Raju met a former nursing assistant called Francene, she was tired out from work, even burned out
and hence started collecting cans. She was very efficient at it, friendly, smiled and sincere. She felt
very sorry for Mr. Raju. During his dumpster diving efforts, whenever he came across a broken condom
or something else that disturbed him, he went to chat with Francene and she gave him about 30 to 45
minutes of therapy and wisdom. Mr. Raju deeply appreciated this support. Francene didn't expect
anything else in return and said she was just glad to help others in need.

The can collectors proposed to Mr. Raju that they will teach him how to collect cans and then
recycle them for cash, this way he can earn some money for living. The folks on the streets
of Montreal downtown will also be left in peace without having to deal with getting
surprising but odd gifts suddenly. However, Mr. Raju was very pleased with his new activity
as it generated nice chats and so refused their offer. He continued to collect the objects
that he liked and gift them. Soon the Can collectors started avoiding Mr. Raju as he was cutting
into their can collection time. Whenever they saw him, they will just nod their head and move on fast.

Pretty soon the word spread among all can collectors and others on street often in Montreal Downtown
about the gifts of Mr. Raju, they are concluded that all the chalice and the tabernacle in Quebec
are simply no match for the great Mr. Raju. They reflected and coined a new phrase for him as
The Sunshine, Joy and Santa Claus of Montreal Downtown.

There was a shelter or refuge downtown that helped the needy. Mr. Raju used his Dumpster Diving skills to
fill up their stock room until he was told that they have no more space and was told to stop. He also donated used books that were discarded by local library to this shelter, the clients were happy to get reading materials.

Mr. Raju wanted peace with the can collectors. So whenever he saw cans in a dumpster or
elsewhere, he immediately told this to a can collector he came across, this person collected
the cans and was very glad. In return, this person will tell Mr. Raju if there is a dumpster with
anything Mr. Raju would be interested in. This mutual relationship worked very well and they all
lived happily ever after.

Here are some interesting links towards the end about the needy and bottom heap of life. It doesn't take much and a string of bad lucks can easily land one in such a situation. If some or many folks you know ostracize you and you feel lonely, then simply cling to Jesus. You will be shown a special path where you can serve others. If this happens then, it really helps to be good with Linux and old computer. Observe and learn efficiently from other volunteers etc., on how to help.

This is so sad to read about. Loneliness is like a plague today, so much porn on net but it is all producing deep emptiness
and societal divide along with other things. Best to have an old PC and focus on communal activities, get together, volunteer, sports, arts, go out to events and festivals etc., Have to make an effort to go out and meet others. Loneliness is the real deal, don't let it get to you and if it has done so already then put in your best efforts to overcome it.

Short Story: Mr. Raju, bag of popcorn and linux community meeting.

Mr. Raju has consistent bad luck in his life. This has made him go to the bottom heap of the food chain
basically forcing him to make peace with his bad luck and poverty. This he has done as best as possible,
finding peace in art and birds. However, there are times when his bad luck really tanks as in this story.

Mr. Raju was going out for a meeting on linux and old computers to serve the needy. In this regard
he was going to meet a prominent member of a local non profit organization that is a well known local
figure. Mr. Raju was walking to the meeting, when he saw a bag of half empty popcorn in a small garden
in font of an apartment complex. It was a cold and dark winter day. Mr. Raju is environmentally friendly.
He thought how nice it will be if the wild pigeons can feast on this pop corn. So he reached out behind
the bag and turned it upside down, all the pop corn insides spilled on the ground. However, Mr. Raju
didn't check behind the bag, there was dog poop behind it and it got quite a bit on his right glove.
Now, Mr. Raju couldn't believe he suddenly got dog poop on his right glove, this is incredible, so he touched
his right glove with his left glove and immediately some of the dog poop jumped to his left glove.
Mr. Raju's nose felt itchy, so he rubbed his nose and now some dog poop got on his nose as well.

Mr. Raju suddenly remembered that he is late for his vital meeting at local coffee shop. So he brushed his
gloves on pavement as best as possible and rushed to the meeting. The prominent member Ms. Diane
was very glad to see him, she rushed in to touch his hands and squeezed his gloves, then it was hot
insides, so she rubbed her hands on her face, chest and side body rapidly for some relief from the itchy
feeling insides the hot coffee shop. Mr. Raju didn't expect things to turn out this way, suddenly he was
in shock and sick, so he sat down and looked at the ground, feeling pale. Ms. Diane asked him, oh my
Mr. Raju suddenly you are looking so pale and sick, can I get you a coffee or something, did I do anything
wrong ? Mr. Raju was spell bound and couldn't speak.

End of Short Story.

Above is one of my favorite sermons that I have listened to several times in the past.

The article below indicates a scenario like that in future:
http://endoftheamericandream.com/arc...es-for-5-years

Makes me rethink my priorities, will my old computer with linux on it save me when such a big event happens ?

noordinaryspider 01-16-2019 11:46 AM

It looks like I may be going offline. The last update to Debian broke X:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=822523

as did restoring the image of a Devuan clone and upgrading to ASCII. I had been having this problem on Arch-based distros (Hyperbola and Parabola) since a few months before a personal crisis last September.

It's difficult to explain and even harder for people to offer help. The next thing that made sense was to put the drive in an enclosure, open it with an old Debian install that still works, and look for xorg.conf to edit as described here: https://blog.lobraun.de/2017/10/31/xorg-configure-no/ but I found folders but no file. The information I relied on once upon a 2004-2016 simply isn't there any more.

It happens regardless of which one of my Thinkpads I use. I have librebooted X60 tablet plural, librebooted X200 and T400, and factory BIOS on an X60 and a T61.

Uruk, downstream from Ubuntu 18.04, still works.

I am essentially unemployable, with or without internet, and am not a fan of corporate surveillance capitalism. Rivjay mentioned elsewhere that people sometimes say goodbye and this seemed like as appropriate a place as any to do so.

I will not be purchasing a cell phone.

fatmac 01-16-2019 12:40 PM

Maybe try OpenBSD, it is Canadian, doesn't have to obey American laws.

noordinaryspider 01-16-2019 01:04 PM

Yea, it might be worth a try; it's always been beyond my technical abilities before but my technical abilities have always looked a lot lower than they actually turn out to be.

It's been an incredible fifteen years. I hate to think who I would have turned out to be without the Linux community. The people are what I am going to miss the most, not the "free stuff".

A very short while ago, people would describe me as "the computer guy" and now I feign total ignorance about all things tech and am grateful for the poverty that gives me a "free ticket" out of the Windows10/iOs/Android dystopia.

What a drag it is getting old.

But on the bright side, I just clonezilla'd my trusty old right-before-the-fall 2008ish image of Damn Small Linux onto a brand new 120 gig IDE drive from China and am about to plug it into my T21 and rebuild my own private nostalgianet. :D :D :D

Hey, my grandmother never threw away her Victrola, either.

rvijay 01-19-2019 06:47 PM

Here is the scoop. This is very hard to share, sad also but is needed.

There are folks who poop on top of the bldg., I live in. It is assumed that these folks are addicts, have no control under
influence and hence they poop. When it rains the poop flows. That is not all, few of them even manage to come indoors to
sleep in winter and poop on the stairs etc., Then also urinate or vomit, walk around and spread it all around. This I was informed happens in a few other bldgs., close by and hence the janitors there even got tired of the cleaning and quit.

Here are some related links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_defecation
http://poopreport.com
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSw79yRnDVs

Now in a tropical country in nature all these waste are decomposed fast and used by plants, trees. However, in cold climate
in cities this just stays and creates big time issues. This is a biohazard. This trend is quite strong in some cities and is documented in youtube videos.

Now one may ask how is this related to old computers and linux ? Here is the very big connection, say you are carrying around an old PC tower, then if there is poop on the staircase that you dont watch, step on it slide and then fall with the old PC tower, get cuts/bruises and get infected by this poop then it becomes a very, very big issue.

That is not all, all this biohazard is an open invitation for several pests that breed with glee in this old crumbling bldg.,
This together with a few other issues is forcing bldg., owner to do major repairs. Hence, I am forced to move out next week,
it will be -40C outsides, we have a winter storm and I have two tropical parrots that need 20C + to survive. The entire apt. needs to be emptied and it is very likely that I will loose most of my Old Computers. As much as this is bad, it is still not as bad as the entire bldg., wiped out by a fire or levelled by a quake etc., So I am basically forced to accept my losses, smile, keep moving and do my best from that point. I am not sure if and when I will be online again. I wish to make the best of this time, chat more with folks in person, slow down relax and plan my next set of future moves carefully.

Until next time, thanks for all the good sharing here, best wishes and have fun with your old computers. :)

However, if folks start abusing each prescription drug, then guess atleast some of us are toast big time. I only saw this issue from far before but now it starting to get closer. Never expected this to affect my use of old computers so much. This is intense indeed.

This event is pretty much like a missile striking ones life. Only the worse things are natural disasters that destroy
entire communities or fire etc., There is pest infestation, this is spreading to other places also. It is not like have too much stuffs, just this apt. is small and somehow the pests found it convenient to spread it appears. They might evacuate others also here as time continues. This entire bldg., is old and needs to be renovated, crumbling, so very convenient for pets to spread, specially in winter. Hence, they are forced to act so that it doesn't morph into other epidemics it seems. Lucky me, I am at the ground zero of all this due to my clutter, I started decluttering ferociously but it is too late now. If I don't co-operate, this gets worse and affects health of others, then I can be fined or even charged strongly. Besides I follow the law, so I will co-operate altho I am a bit slow. The authorities will go thru all stuffs I have, anything that is contaminated in their view simple has to be thrown, this includes electronics and old computers. Will be lucky if they allow me to get the hard drive out atleast. I chat with a social worker and he said situations like this are not uncommon, they do happen sometimes and one just needs to relocate and start again. There are some empty spots in this scenario that have to be filled/answered as I go along. Even a few months ago I couldn't imagine anything remotely close to this. It is not at all easy but in one to 3 months the picture will be more clear, whatever lies ahead.

Do you have a car? A lot of people live in cars in my neck of the woods and it really isn't that different from living in a house/apartment, just much smaller. It would hardly be ideal for the parrots, but at least they would have heat and you.

There may not be any more old computers, but there will always be concepts such as "art" however they express themself.

Please check in when you can and stay safe.

Check out local weather above, not a nice time to have to leave apt. Not convenient to carry old PC around either two factors, slippery and cold snow can get inside the PC also.

Okay.

Community, does anyone live in Montreal and/or have offsite contact info for rvijay?

We need to get info about what is called an "extreme weather shelter":

They have them in my own country and it isn't welfare or charity, it is analagous to calling an ambulance. People can die from weather.

I do have local contacts and help, just has to come around at the right time. No car but the public transport here is good.
Specially for the parrots, having parrots is a big complication at a time like this. City opens extreme weather shelter after a certain point, we are not there yet for now. I am very far from Victoria on the other side of Canada.

My life has always been like this, like Book of Job in the Bible. So have had to make peace with my bad luck and poverty. Did pretty well so far in reflection.

Now I feel like leaving with just a small notebook, few change clothes and a pencil even.
In this cold, even a pen will freeze and not write.

Here are some very nice articles that we can learn from above. I am very thankful for all my problems in life, have learned a lot from them. If I was given the change again, rather have my problems than have a smooth rich life. Can extend the Linux concept to real life and give others a hand also when possible.

It seems compassionate folks have it really bad these days. I was wondering why it is so hard to get temporary foster care for my 2 small parrots, the Vet docs., focus more on money I felt, they didn't have an answer for me now.
Then I came across these articles that are very touching:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...5f4_story.html
https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...-medicine.html
https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/da...?pid=169766762
https://news.hamlethub.com/riverdale...nues-to-unfold

If my situation improves in future, perhaps I can donate some of my art to such Vet Docs., for their relief, or for those
who work in animal rescues also.

I'm not going to unload my own personal tragedies here, just comment on how much I admire you and learn from you, rvijay. You are absolutely right about how we can extend the most important concepts of Linux outward, beyond free software and old computers.

NomadBSD looks like a logical next step if I cannot effectively communicate and troubleshoot the problems I am having with X. Learning to function in the command line only is another possibility.

Radio does have the potential to do some of the things that our once-beloved internet no longer can:

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/a...-diy-anonymous
http://www.hamuniverse.com/shortwave.html
https://www.wikihow.com/Use-a-Shortwave-Radio

But more intriguing than that even is something that is happening at a local park--it isn't exactly a community, more like a solidarity network.

So here is the scoop. Tomorrow this place will be locked up, I have to leave with minimum items.
Then after a week or so from then due to pest infestation, all my items have to be discarded.
So I will be starting from scratch. My life has always been like this, one challenge after another.
I will be starting fresh all over and need to do the best from this point on.

The good thing is a refuge will come and pick up my parrots and keep them as long as needed until I find
a new place. So I can't complain.

Good luck, & I hope you get settled in somewhere new quickly, all the best.

Agree: good luck to you rvijay, and to your feathered friends.

Best of luck to you and parrots and may the temporary separation be as short as possible.

The above looks interesting, specially with containers and all.

Here is an update:
Lost pretty much all I had including most hard drives, old pcs, cables and anything related.
Lots of change, so very tired and resting daily a lot but surviving.
In temporary place with very limited common PC access.
Have no hangover of using Net, Old PC. Just listen to clock radio sometimes.
Feels like I fell back 20 to 50 years in time, but making more friends in real life.
Managing quite well.

Best Wishes to all :)
