An advice for a good old movie to watch on YouTube?

Of the old movies currently available to watch on YouTube, what would people recommend?

For example yesterday I saw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nas8Y1IW_Tk The Tall Men (1955). The beginning is set in winter, so you can turn the heating off and feel how cold it is. The scene where they are in the shack was rather slow - too much time spent looking at Jane Russell's socks.

There's already a 'good movie to watch' thread here, with many youtube links.

I've scrolled that thread all the way back to page 100, and the few YouTube links are to trailers, fan-edits, documentaries, short works, unavailable, or distorted. No links to full movies unfortunately.

there are many sites and services and apps dedicated to movies, why bother using youtube for movies.

Although I guess maybe some old smartTvs or something it's the only free app or something...

IME, film makers who have rights on a film only allow it on youtube when those rights are worthless.

I am very sorry, I should have described exactly what I meant this thread to be. It is my fault for not doing so.

What I intend this thread to be is a collection of *links* to specific full complete original movies on YouTube that the posters have watched and would recommend to others. People can then click on the link and immediately see the full complete original movie without searching, and without the high risk that the movie is not in fact available.

It is easy to provide a link: find the YouTube page for the full complete original movie, copy the page URL, and then paste this URL into the post, and also please give the title.

Favourite movies *without* links can be given in the other movie thread "An advice for a good movie to watch ?" which might be available here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...-watch-697994/

Thanks.

Not available on YouTube, so here is a link to Archive.org, although many or most of the films there are blurry.

Riffraff, 1947

https://archive.org/details/uma-aven...ado-sous-titre

It is in English.

An adventure with some excellent cinematography, but the would-be femme-fatale is disappointingly overweight/fat.

Maybe depends on the film.
Did you make an actual comparison, or are you just being contrary?

Also, are you sure you checked all the download options? For this one, there's a 1.1GB MKV option. Looks OK to me - definitely less blurry than the H.264, higher resolution. The original probably isn't much better. Not all films were made in high quality back then, and this one definitely looks like a low budget production. I skipped through it, looks like it was filmed entirely on set (all scenes are indoors).

All movies I checked on archive.org come in several formats and sizes, it's worth checking out.

Anybody knows why these movies are up on youtube like this? The (US American) entertainment industry usually takes great care to prevent this. I don't think they're in the public domain now?

They're B grade Westerns not in touch with today's sensitivities on women, race or sexual orientation. I'd imagine they're a liability at this stage. I imagine they went off the list they monitor and send take-downs for.

In that context, it could be argued this thread's title is an Oxymoron. "A Good Old Movie?" They're still charging money for "Gone with the wind," but that's about the only one. The exception proves the rule.

I guess so.
The first one is with John Wayne, a household name it used to be, and good colors/resolution.
I'll have to watch it to be able to assess it.

Usually it comes down to "I guess there's a good reason why this film is forgotten", but there might be the occasional pearl, who knows.

teckk 02-03-2022 10:10 AM

In the US, copyrights last for 60 years. Then the work changes into public domain. It's still owned, still is intellectual property, but it's not unlawful to download it and watch it without the consent of the property owner. You can't sell it, or make money off of it.

That is the way I understand that. So anything before 1960 is in the public domain now. I don't think that it is unlawful for youtube to have it, and for you to watch it.

Anyone else know more on this topic?

Edit:
Netflix is renting those DVD's, but, I'm sure that Netflix has an agreement with the intellectual property owner to rent it. And that's because the owner is getting a cut of the rental.

ondoho 02-03-2022 10:33 AM

^ makes sense. I had a look at the uploader for Rio Bravo, It's "Grjngo - Western Movies", there's plenty more old movies.
It does look like they're all from the 40s/50s.
They also have a website, and a German company behind it.

US copyrights can be renewed. And, they can be owned by corporations. For instance, the courts rightly decided that the rights to "Mickey Mouse®" did not expire with Walt Disney (RIP), even though he was the artist who originally drew him. They belong to "The Walt Disney Company, Inc."

As for good movies to watch –*I recently watched an A&E special, "Ike – Countdown to D-Day." An excellent nine-part film that is historically accurate.

Sorry I should have titled this thread "Links to good movies I have watched from end to end and would recommend to others". There's no point in just providing the links that a YouTube search would find, because that will give movies mostly of poor quality. Apologies, I should have made that clearer beforehand.

It's like asking someone to recommend a good book to read, but they deliver the contents of a whole bookshop to your home - so you are back to square one.

This is OT so excuse me. I thought I'd try here as only old guys like old films.
When I was young in the 1970s, RTE, the Irish television Broadcaster, showed repeats of some typically English TV Cabaret show. The acts were good, but the Master of Ceremonies was even better. He would introduce acts in pompous and incomprehensible gobbledygook, which he would translate in his incrediblyposh English accent - let me try an example:

The guy had a gavel, which he would probably bang halfway through 'Consumption' and the fire eaters would come onstage. Then the show would finish with a chorus of "Down by the Old Bull & Bush."

Does anyone remember the show's name? Know where it can be viewed/downloaded?

@business_kid
The program was "The Good Old Days", and the Master of Ceremonies was Leonard Sachs. I never watched a whole show, just saw bits of it now and then.
