Problems with Kyocera FS-1200 PS printer on Fedora 21
Hello All,
I have recurring problems with printer errors with this printer. Quite often the printer will spit out a blank page then one saying "ERROR: rangecheck OFFENDING COMMAND: filter...".
It does seem to depend on what application is sending the file to the printer. The printer is set up as a network printer, and almost none of the print tasks sent from a Win7 laptop result in a successful print.
I have installed the latest available driver ppd from Kyocera; tried a number of different drivers available on the system; monkeyed with the printer emulation settings (KPDL, PCL6...) and nothing seems to make any difference. All attempts to send a 'test page' from the printer config result in the above error.
My most recent research indicates that the above error may be caused by ghostcript and that using poppler to do file conversion (pdf to ps?) can fix this error.
Does anyone know how that would be done on Fedora 21, or at least how it might be tested?

Thanks for that. I have had a good look at the discussion related to the bug.
The one thing that isn't made clear is how to determine what your current 'pdftops-renderer-default' is.
I guess the changes that were made to the package for ubuntu also percolated into other distros.
I guess all I can do is try the different options and see if any make a difference.

AFAIU, the renderer uses Ghostscript by default (for most distros), since it offers better colour management support, and is more optimised for printing apparently, but some users have found that the pdftops (Poppler filter) produces more compatible PostScript for some situations.

Yes, that would be my approach. BTW, if you don't find any improvement following this experiment, then I think the next step would be to raise a bug report.
I tried both settings for 'pdftops-renderer-default' and pdftops appears to be the answer.
I was able to print a file via evince that previously caused the printer to error.
So, problem looks to be solved for Fedora, and expect that the issue with printing from Win7 is probably similar.
Thanks for your help.

Good to know. It may help others who come searching. There are a number of bug reports where the print job workflow has caused problems with producing valid PS that can be processed by hardware specific filters, but for most of us the newer CUPS workflow has caused no issues.
