Here's the short version. You need to do 'sudo python setup.py install'
Then just 'mlbviewer.py' will run it for the first time. Hit 'q' to quit. Then do 'nano -w ~/.mlb/config' and enter your email address and password where it says on the top 2 lines. If you want to make changes in the config file to the commands use to launch the player, go for it, but it will probably work with the default (mplayer). Hit CTL+x to save and quit. Then do 'mlbviewer.py' again and you should be all set!

And, 45 seconds later, voila! Didn't get video, but based on that experience, I am 100% confident that the answer to that is in this thread somewhere.
i don't think i'm seeing the condensed games listed - they're supposed to be with the "t"/top plays screen? do you see them for today and yesterday?
It takes awhile for MLB to add Condensed Games to the mlb.tv schedule jsp file we use. Probably on the order of 12 hours, maybe? You will probably only ever see CG's for the previous day's games and before. I have seen morning games where top plays even aren't available until the next day.
I'm (barely) considering pulling our highlights from an alternate XML file which would give us "in progress" highlights aka the highlights you can get from the web page while the game is still in progress. My experience with mlbscores is that XML files can get very hairy to deal with in code, though.
I've not run setup.py myself because, as a developer on the project, I find it's a much better idea to know the mlbviewer I'm running is the the code I just edited.
But...
If you have run setup, then I'm guessing all you need to do is type mlbviewer.py from the command-line.
What he meant by "go into mlbviewer" is changing to the mlbviewer directory. I think I put quick install steps (e.g just the commands you need to type) in the INSTALL file for the lazy and attention-deficit folks like myself. ;-)
Thanks -- I had run setup, but didn't know how to launch the program. I guess I'm a terminal DOS/Windows user, not knowing what types of files can be "executed" in Linux.
But anyway: Great friggin' job on mlbviewer! I suspect it's partly because of MLBAM's contempt for its captive audience, but you've managed to put together a command-line interface that's easier to use and less buggy than MLB's own online setup.
Incidentally, what's the final word on VLC compatibility? I had been using VLC in Windows to crop the 4:3 streams to fullscreen, and I have no idea how to do that in mplayer. Also, my wife and I mostly watch archived games because we're transplanted New Yorkers now living in California, and I need to be able to skip commercials with the slider bar.

A couple pages back there was something about VLC. The problem with seeking (slider bar) is it only works in the first few seconds. The URL's have a very short lifetime. After about 30 seconds, the URL is no longer valid so seeking wouldn't work.
As for cropping, some games will be in 4:3 and some will be in 16:9. If you crop across the board, you'll lose picture when you crop a 16:9 broadcast. In mplayer, you can use 'e' and 'w' for pan scan (zooming.) For a 16:9 game, you probably shouldn't do anything unless you don't care that you're losing picture when you crop. For a 4:3 game, you would press and hold 'e' until the picture zooms to fill the screen.
could we get our own forumlet here so that we could have multiple threads going?
I don't know. I guess I could look into that. The benefit of having one thread is one place to look. The draw back is 45 pages worth of thread to look through. I guess I always intended to find nuggets in the threads and either bookmark them in a periodic post or incorporate them into a FAQ. My biggest fear of having multiple threads is having to answer the same questions over and over again without an easy way to point someone to the answer. Though, wading through 45 pages isn't an easy way either. Let me stew on that for awhile.

Bummer. So there's no way to do commercial-skipping under mlbviewer? In Windows I could skip around to my heart's content using WMP or VLC (though the latter took a little configuring, without which it couldn't seek at all).

Thanks, that should do the trick. I just want to crop the games that MLB.tv insists, for reasons I cannot fathom, on broadcasting in 4:3 with the black border.

I've never been able to seek easily and consistently with any player in Linux (whether I'm using mlbviewer or not). I've always chalked up the minute break each half-inning as the price of Freedom, but of course it'd be great if we can figure out a way around it.
Can I ask what config you did with VLC in Windows? I don't think I've ever used VLC to watch games on Windows, but I'm wondering how the seek could work in Windows but not Linux with the same player? Surely once it's loaded the stream, it should behave the same way regardless of which OS it's running on?
Sure. I just used the Media Player Connectivity plugin to pick up the stream, configured according to this guide.
[edit] Should mention that the MPC plugin isn't nominally compatible with Firefox 3 RC1 or RC2, but it works fine if you edit the maxVersion setting in the plugin's install.rdf.[/edit]

hi everybody from italy! i found mlbviewer.. great!!
now with condensed game is quite perfect! yes.. i said quite just because using "t" keystroke to access CG you get the final result of game. can you put CG just under another keystroke? ("c")
and another question.. what's the url of xml and jsp file of a game?

thanks in advance.. for this great software!
It's not an easy change and it's likely to produce a lot of redundant code.
What if I hide the Rewind Recap (the one that has the scores) and make 'r' show it in the Top Plays listing? Would you be okay with seeing the list of highlights or do you want to go into your condensed game with no spoilers whatsoever?
