Shutdown, restart and Log off buttons / terminal commands not working

Hi,

I have an installation of Elementary OS Freya, I've customised it by installing Guake, Gimp, Thunderbird, Blender, and Variety. In all respects this installation has worked as well if not better than every other Linux distribution I've tried in the past.

However, from the very beginning Freya has consistently refused to allow me to log-off, shutdown or restart. If I try to do any of those things, using the GUI or the terminal commands I end up at a the image of the mountains that's used on the log in screen. Even using "killall" or "poweroff" commands from the terminal leave me at that screen and I have to use the power button to turn off my laptop and manually restart.

I'm dual booting elementary OS with Windows 7 and am using a MSI Ghost Pro with 8GB of RAM and a Nvidia 870M. I have 2 120GB SSD's that were in a raid array. I formatted the original Windows 8.1 installation, turned off the RAID, installed Windows 7 on one SSD and Elementary OS on the other. My Nvidia card is using the Nouveau drivers not the proprietary Nvidia drivers.

Both operating systems otherwise work as expected except that Elementary OS seems to have an issue shutting down / restarting and logging off. I've installed the OS several times now, making sure I've formatted the drive each time and the problem persists no matter how much I've customised the installation.

I found a couple of fixes for similar problems that edited the grub using a "force" command and an "efi" command, neither of those made any difference to my problem.

If anyone can help me fix this I'd be most grateful.

Thanks for reading all the way through,

Martin

Keruskerfuerst - I believe the desktop environment was developed in-house and is called Pantheon.
