How to improve blurriness of ATI X300 graphics card?

I have a laptop from 2007 with an ATI X300 graphics card on Debian 7/XFce4. I installed xserver-xorg-video-ati, xserver-xorg-video-mach64, xserver-xorg-video-r128, and xserver-xorg-video-radeon. /var/logs/Xorg.0.log seems to indicate the card is detected "[ 5694.700] (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility X300 (M22) 5460 (PCIE)" (ChipID = 0x5460)".

The problem is the screen is very blurry. I have difficulty reading the text and after an hour at the screen, have much eye strain. I tried plugging in an external monitor to the VGA port (I do not know if that uses the same graphics card) and that was so terribly blurry as to be impossible to use for more than 1 minute...I can even see the pixels for red-blue-green seperately. This external screen is very clear when used with other computers of a similar age.

I tried different display setting applications, for XFce4 and LXDE, but these will not allow a refresh rate higher than 60 HZ. I also tried adjusting the anti-aliasing, hinting, sub-pixel order, and DPI settings, by making random choices, as I do not understand the meaning of these settings, but the best configuration I found is still flurry.

I found some documentation [here](http://www.togaware.com/linux/survivor/ATI_Radeon.html) and [here](http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_boo...I_Radeon.shtml) suggesting that the "fglrx-driver" package contains a non-free alternative to the xserver-xorg-video-* drivers, and I think perhaps a non-free driver might have a clearer appearance, but this information seems to be many years old. when I check the package description of Wheezy packages [here](https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/fglrx-driver) it says it is for "AMD Radeon HD 7000, AMD Radeon HD 6000, and AMD Radeon HD 5000.", which I assume does not mean "ATI X300". Is there any place to get a non-free driver for this model on Debian 7?

The fglrx-driver package should be fine with that card. That is a 5460 chip.

The fglrx-driver package discription is referring to the series number. Series 4000 and older are not supported.

If I were you I would run;
Code:
apt-cache show fglrx-driver
for the complete discription. While that is a 5460 chip the card is not a HD xxxx card. I would look into it further before continuing.

Do not install the package using anything but the cli. There you will bet the message to run another command that will set the card up.

One thing you could check is the ATI site. They also have drivers there and there may be one that is better suited to your particular card.

My HD 6450, I think, does better with the generic foss drivers.

His card is not some 5xxx series card, so as to be supported by fglrx. It is a Xxxx card, ~10 years old, and it is only supported by radeon for the last 5+ years.

It may be supported by 1 of the firmware-linux packages.

Do you have the resolution set to match the screen's physical resolution? If not, it's scaling the display, which can cause the "blurriness".

(Yes I know the last post was a month ago, but if the OP hasn't corrected the problem, maybe this suggestion will help).
