Difference between Debian and Ubuntu...?

Hello folks,

I used Debian about 15 years ago. I'm not looking for a good distro to act as my professional and personal primary system.

I recently installed Ubuntu but I'm not really happy with it. Could someone outline the major differences (and similarities) between Debian and Ubuntu? I believe Ubuntu derives from Debian, but I'm also interested in the "ease of use" factor with respect to GUI-based tools and just the user friendliness.

I just tried Manjaro at the suggestion of a friend and I was appalled at the simplistic, unsophisticated, badly organized desktop experience.

Thanks,

OK. What are you looking for then?

You started this thread weeks ago. I never clicked it because it's the sort of question that attracts lots of low quality "chatty" answers.
Are you now trying to repeat the "success"?
Anyhow, I can't believe that the question didn't come up at all in that other thread.
I also don't see why you can't just put the question in a search engine?

I'm not sure why you added that at the end. Has nothing to do with the question asked and rather makes me think you want to establish some sort of complaining attitude right from the start.

Oh, I missed this bit:

Yep, I can already see where this thread is heading.

you can use a search engine to find pages describing these differences.

Yep, I can already see where this thread is heading.

I made a typo that I obviously didn't notice. I meant to say that I AM looking for a good bistro to act as my primary professional and personal system.

I did put that question in a search engine. I always try to find answers before posting.... Honestly, there was so much variability in the results that came up, I didn't get a clear picture of what my experience would be with Debian today (I last used it around 2002). I just removed Ubuntu so I had a moderately decent understanding of it (although I did not do anything really nitty gritty technical with it).

Finally, I posted the comment about Manjaro in case anyone was interested because there was some back and forth between people who had participated in this thread. Yes, I was frustrated and I probably should have waited until the morning to post. I just didn't like the condescending remarks I got in response to a simple question I posted on the manjaro forum.

I posted that I had read the entire 120 page user guide but couldn't figure something out. The response: "Uh, why don't you try playing around." An answer of "There is no such configuration" would have been fine if that was/is the case.

Another poster replied to my question about placement of icons on the dock: "Usually I tie a bow line and one aft." Hmm.

I think I have a lot of guidance to proceed now.

I'll mark this thread solved at the end of the day. I'm sure all the experienced folks here won't feel like commenting more, but I'll leave it open until end of day. I'm happy to read any and all commentary and feedback and ideas. It's actually a way to direct my follow up reading.

Thanks again to all....

I think you want Bistromathics!
(I know it's just another typo, but what a glorious one)

Glorious indeed. When I read your comment, I said to myself "Hmm, how did I ever mistype that...?!" And I understood why anyone (Linux fan or otherwise) would have thought it to be peculiar in the context of the rest of the thread.

Well, it happens. That's what I get for continuing to work when dead tired....

Gees Louise...!!! And speaking of typos, I just noticed that in my response to I typed "bistro" instead of "distro". Now THAT is the damn auto-correct on the Mac. When rushing, it's all too easy to hit space bar instead of ESC to avoid accepting the suggested spelling correction.
