Can't install Debian. Installer doesn't detect my ISO image

Hey guys,
The first day I got my laptop, I had debian for a day but I forgot how I did it -.-;;
Im trying to install it with a usb drive because i don't have a cd drive.
This is also my first time ever using linux so i know nothing about it.

this is what i did:

# sudo mkdosfs /dev/sdX
# syslinux /dev/sdX1

then i downloaded these two files and put it on the usb drive:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dis.../hd-media/gtk/

then i made a file called syslinux.cfg that contains:
default vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=788

then i put the cd1 image onto the usb drive.

At one of the installation steps, it just says that it can't find the installer iso image so i don't know what to do now.

does anyone have any ideas?

thanks,
d

Perhaps reading the manual will help (I'm assuming you're using an amd-64 system).

I actually followed that when I did it the first time.
I tried a few more times again. So following the directions, what happens now is that:

when i make my bootable usb drive with boot.img.gz, it boots but the installation doesn't detect my netinstall image thats on that same drive. i tried again to make it bootable by #syslinux /dev/sdX1 but when i try to boot from it, i only get a blinking cursor after bios and then it stops.
