I've been using grsync exclusively, and, if the progress bar were related in any way to the actual progress of the backup, it'd be perfect for my purposes.

backintime is just a GUI frontend for rsync with very sensible defaults, so it is absolutely noob-friendly. I set it up to run (shortly) after boot, quiet and unobtrusively (its process gets automatically "niced"), can only recommend it.

Another vote for luckybackup. It makes me think of Chinese restaurants.

I use (command-line) rsync and help users use (GUI, but unlisted above) Grsync... are most even command-line or should Grsync be listed?

Hmm, I use both tar+gzip+rsync, and also dar.
