File Manager of the Year
What is your file manager of choice?
--jeremy |
I suggest you add worker to the list, see here.
It is mature, well maintained, features full, highly configurable - and if it is not included I won't be able to vote on this poll ;) |
Worker was removed as it was in the category last year for the duration of the poll and did not get a single vote.

It's my fault, then :(
|
Probably a long shot, but how about vifm. It has gone through a lot of changes in the last few months.
|
vifm has been added.

ROX-Filer in gui
MC/Midnight Commander in init-3 boot |
Dolphin looks pretty good for me.
|
I don't expect it to be added, but emacs is my real fav! ;)
|
While I wouldn't vote for it, EagleMode is pretty cool. I use Dolphin.
|
It's not a 'file manager' per se, but I just use ls, rm, cp, mv, ln, etc. for all my filesystem needs.
|
I only use two of the available choices on a regular basis. Dolphin and Midnight Commander. I use Nautilus, Thunar depending on the system. The vote goes to Midnight Commander, I've been using it the longest. If a system does not have it installed it is one of the first things that happens.
|
Why there is no core-utils?
|
Recently I took the time to learn MC's keybindings. I really like it now.
|
Dolphin - user-friendly and very configurable (with no Nepomuk/Strigi rubbish)
|
I voted konqueror but I also use mc
|
MC 4.8 is a massive improvement over 4.7. It includes two cool 256-color themes and follows freedesktop.org conventions: for example, its config files now go in ~/.config/mc. It also (finally) has UTF-8 support.
It definitely has my vote. If only they'd fix the SSL certificate on the project homepage. |
+1 for thunar, even if its not the best file manager, still much better than KDE's bloated stuff.. To remedy to Thunar's simplicity, I use core-utils and CLI as much as possible..

Nautilus everywhere...!!!

Hi,
Nautilus since I use it the most. Kind regards, Eric |
Rodent [1] is missing from the list.
[1] http://xffm.org/ 'EmelFM/EmelFM2' is misspelled: should read 'emelFM/emelFM2' Are there reasons to keep the awkward 'emelFM/emelFM2' choice? Many programmes have ancestors, but you seem to point them only for emel. For example, I didn't see a 'Gnome 2/Gnome 3' choice in DE. Personally I find useful Thunar, emelFM2 and Rodent in different settings, but voted for emel. |
PCmanfm wins my vote because it has hal and dbus support and minimal system requirements (ram, cpu and such).

Depends which environment I'm using at the time, such as Gnome2 - Nautilas, KDE4 - Dolphin, Xfce4 - Xfm...

Thunar :)
|
PCManFM here in LXDE
|
I do believe what Desktop Environment is being used is a factor here.
Personally, using KDE, it's a big thumbs up for Dolphin. Then again Konqueror -'Super User Mode' has its place under KDE, in my opinion. Lots of permutations by jingo... :twocents: |
Thunar is too heavyweight for my liking, but I use it the most anyway.
And it deserves a vote because of the bad-ass viking on the about screen. That's the only reason I prefer it over pcmanfm. |
I do not expect it to be added but here it is still GNU Emacs ...
|
Rox-filer in X, mc or ranger out of X.
|
Nautilus
and Midnight Commander |
Also, should Andromeda be added to the poll? I like its style, if it had more customisation options it would be my top pick. I'm sure someone out there likes it more than the other file managers.
|
Nautilus followed by GNOME Commander. In certain instances GNOME Commander is better.
|
Andromeda has been added.

When I want a file manager I use Konqueror.
|
And the winner again... Vim!
I chose Thunar, and Dolphin is something I use a lot too - it just depends on whether I'm using Xfce or KDE for the most part, and Midnight Commander... well it's good to see that it's actually listed - as it should be ;)
But really, Vim, vi, cp, cpio, dd, rsync, and mv are the ones I really use the most LOL! I hope that helps :) Kindest regards, . |
Nautilus. Hands-down.
|
Double Commander
I'd propose Double Commander (doublecmd), it's still new and not fully finished, but it's a nice and functional multiplatform Total Commander clone...
|
It's either Thunar or PCManFM for me, but i choose Thunar because custom right click menu wins.
|
I think Doublecmd should be in this list, because once you try it, nothing ese really works for you :)
|
Double Commander has been added.

+1 to Dolphin. I use it all the time, especially in gnome. Why? i like the little plus symbols for highlighting files when they're not all in a nice neat square. I also like how when you drag and drop a file in Dolphin, you get the option to, copy, move, or create a symlink. Konqueror also has these features and i personally like it better as a file manager, but i think konqueror as a web browser is horrible, and as a gnome user, i'd rather bring in just a file manager then, a swis army knife file manger web browser combo. And for these reason, i use Dolphin.
A additional note that's just come to mind, i also like how Dolphin doesn't try to take over the desktop in xfce, like bloody Nautilus does. I hate Nautilus. |
Nautilus
|
Nautilus and it's forks are excellent, so is Dolphin. But I need a icon based fm with instant access to command line where I can see output on stdout/stderr. And I need a fm which actually uses the extra cores on my box for something useful. And I don't need extra crap on my fm apart from icons (like bookmarks, menus, trees and the like): I want to be distracted the least from my work, which is darn more important. And I never want to be treated like a moron: if I want bookmarks, I will define them, I do not need a filemanager to create bookmarks and directories and tell me tha't where I should keep my "videos", "music" or whatever.
That's why I use Rodent. Granted, Rodent is still missing things like transparent access to mobile phones, ftp servers, ssh/sftp hosts and smb servers, but that stuff is in the oven and will soon be available to the general public. |
Thunar
This is by far the best file manager that I have found to date. My favorite feature is the custom actions. I will warn you though, the custom actions will make you lazy.
|
I do like Thunar, if i'm not using Dolphin, it'll be Thunar. I've never looked into the the Thunar extensions. I should, and if i'm happy, maybe i can replace Dolphin and have a more native file manager to my gtk environment.
