I'd like to set up Ubuntu as a server. My client will be Windows 7 with Exceed or Putty. I do want to use X Windows editors run from Ubuntu, on my PC.
I've only done basic Linux user commands, and I'm completely new to Linux administration. I think we will be installing Ubuntu, unknown version at this point. So I will not need "Linux for Dummies", but I will need "Linux administration for dummies".
Can anyone recommend a web page or book from Amazon for noobs like me that will explain steps like I'm 5? Lol.
And what version of Ubuntu do you recommend? I am just giving up on CentOS 7 with seems to have little support, not enough apps, and little help out there. So I don't want the newest Ubuntu. I'd like the previous major version. I.e. if the current version is 8.0, I'd prefer version 7.x (where x is the latest minor update).
Yes I've spent 16+ hours learning stuff, and reading 30+ web pages, but there is a lot to learn. I'm doing the best I can at this point.
Some of the things I'll have to do:
- Set up and run X windows.
- Set up and run email.
- Set up and run ftp.
- Set up and run Samba to map my home dir to a Windows drive on my client PC.
So I will need instructions to get these going, and how to fix certain errors.
Are there any X Window or other utils to help me set up the above?
Thank you.
