Hi --do you know which file to set this in so that YOU doesn't hang up for AGES with message "Getting a list of Mirror servers"
It takes several minutes (up to about 3 or 4) before control come back before I can actually enter the data manually so there must be a config file or script file somewhere.
The above link also didn't work for me
I was stuck in 'Retrieving updates 0%' for ages till it finally bombed out
Yast=>Online Update=>New Server=>
Input, Choose HTTP, then type server:
ftp.uni-bremen.de
Then input directory
pub/mirrors/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/
OK
Next
Finding that both, the retrieval of the server list and retrieval of updates do not work, indicates to me that something is wrong with your internet connection.
Maybe you can add some servers to /etc/youservers to get quicker to the second stage of the update.
EDIT: Another hint I found on the SUSE support db was to turn on passive_ftp in /etc/wgetrc, in case you are located behind a firewall.
10 is actually working (Beta 4) it's my REAL system 9.3 that doesn't work.
I wonder if there is a little script or program that runs this and somehow has got corrupted or deleted.
I'll restore from my image of 3 days ago and see what happens --I've had a couple of weird 9.3 probs today like sound getting hosed up etc etc so it might be time to restore a fully known working system and see what happens.
(For partition images have been using Acronis True Image --works for Linux as well (stand alone). I orginally got this package for Windows but it backs up Linux partition images --no prob and a 10 min restore is much better than Linux re-installs and trying to remember the config changes) http://www.acronis.com there's probably other equally good stuff out there as well.
Thanks for your help --normally 9.3 is a breeze --the only thing I never succeeded in getting working was playing commercial (encrypted) region 2 DVD's --but that's not a showstopper for me in any case and it's working again in rel 10 Beta 4.

Use this very manual I used to update Xine and Kaffeine and now it plays even a kitchen sink SuSE 9.3 Commercial DVDs Howto
My advice is not to use update at all. I only made my system (9.2, and then 9.3) unusable after YOU updates, and there're no new versions anyway, only rebuild old ones with small fixes perhaps.

That in fact is true IF you update "Linux Kernel Patch", which I always avoided doing and that's why my system is still flawless and intact. Grand rule: If it works - don't fix it!
Next time I'll update Manually if I need any specific stuff.
BTW the DVD stuff doesn't work on my system --I've tried that whole process about 20 times in all and still can't play the DVD --maybe some of the newer Region 2 stuff has changed the encryption --unlikely as they still work on Windows and also on stand alone domestic DVD players
I've just given up with DVD playing on 9.3 and hope the official Release 10 comes out soon as DVD works on the Beta 4 version.
RC1 (Release Candidate 1 should be out I think next week).
I'm sorry it didn't work for you, because I play any DVD possible, from Blockbuster etc., Try to remove all that stuff that you installed earlier getting your DVD work, and make fresh install from that manual I mentioned above. I also recommend reboot after the process!
I couldn't hold myself and made shot of my SuSE 9.3 My SuSE
