YAST cannot see disks for 64-bit SUSE 9.2 install

Get message 'Could not mount partition /dev/sdb2 to /mnt/.' when trying to install 64-bit SUSE 9.2 as a dual-boot with existing Windows XP. Original problem was that hard disks were not seen at all by YAST, a manual install and ATA_PIIX driver loaded with insmod:ide-generic showed the disks but then gave above 'Could not mount' msg. 32-bit SUSE 9.2 installs fine.
