Volume of music will not set correctly...openSuSE 10.2

Regardless of whether I'm playing a CD or a single mp3 I have to turn up the volume on my speakers to full blast in order to hear the song/s. When I go into YAST | Hardware | Sound Configuration the music instantly blares out at full volume. My Master volume (w/in Sound Config) is set as follows: PCM=96 and Mono=93.

I logout and back in and the settings (for PCM & Mono) will not become effective until I go back into YAST/Hardware/Sound etc....is this a driver issue?...I'm using onboard AC97 sound controller with an intel8x0 driver...thoughts please? Thanks...

When you say "logout", do you mean computer restart? Is the service "alsasound" activated in Yast/system/system services?

auxsvr...thanks for your reply...

yes alsasound is enabled...by logging out I mean to end the current session and return to the login screen...not a restart....

If you go to kmix settings menu/configure kmix, is "restore volume on login" checked?

auxsvr...yes to your last reply...

I have two volume control apps...KMIX and Volume Control...regardless of which program I'm using the "PCM" volume is set to around 3 out of 10...when I move the PCM slider up in either program the volume jumps (same effect as going into YAST | Sound)...but when I select another song the volume starts back at 3...not sure what this is telling me...you have any idea/suggestion? I'm using onboard audio (SiS S17012). Thanks for your time...
