VMWARE won't install on 64 bit SUSE 11.1

I installed the Live CD to a hard disk.
When I try and install vmware workstation the package manager refuses to install it giving a message "Vmware workstation is already installed'.

I can't remove vmware as the package manager can't find it.

Even with the rpm command lines the package manager says "vmware workstation already installed" and when I try to remove it it says "vmware workstation is not installed'.

RPM update doesn't work either as the package manager says "vmware workstation not installed".

vmware workstation is one of my ESSENTIAL apps -- I need to have a Windows XP virtual machine to run some old hardware which ONLY runs on Windows XP or Windows 2000.

I really like the look and feel of SUSE 11.1 but haven't we been here before with a "Broken Package manager".

I'm not sure if this problem is because I installed the live CD on to the hard disk via the "INSTALL".

Maybe the full install from a DVD might work -- anybody running vmware workstation on the 64 bit version of SUSE 11.1

Cheers

-K

Try vmware 2.0

I find the Live CD doesn't load all the correct libraries. I use the full x64 DVD, load the kernel sources, and c++. From there you should be able to load the vmware rpm with "rpm -ivh VMwarexxxxxxx.rpm". You then run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl, ignore the messages that you have the wrong version of c++ compiler, and it should work from there. Make sure you choose your logged in user as the admin user.

Also, I use vmware server very little now since Virtualbox works so much cleaner. Virtualbox also lets you switch to a mode called seamless where your Windows windows appear as if they are directly on the desktop. Virtualbox however, doesn't seem to run as a daemon prior to logging in. So, user VMware when you want a good XP station for remote access, and Virtualbox for seamless mode. USB devices work nicely in virtual box also.
