Unhappy Unable to run GUI Suse 10.1 after Xorg update

Hello fellowes Suse Geeks (like myself)

I'm having problems starting my GUI after I tried to update Xorg from 7.1 to 7.3.

Everything was working just fine and dandy, I've always been able to use Novell's XGL just fine, but I've always been intrigued by Beryl because of the extra features. I tried using it once a long time ago, but didn't get the results I wanted so I sticked to Novell's XGL. Recently I decided to persue the dream of using Beryl again, so I started to read the wiki article in http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl and noticed that it was recommended to update my Xorg from 7.1 to 7.2. I googled it and found that there is in fact a Xorg 7.3 for Suse 10.1 so I decided to download the RPM from the web site:

ftp://ftp.skynet.be/pub/software.ope...nux_10.1/i586/

Sadly, I didn't realized until AFTER I installed it that my ATI Mobility Radeon X600 is not compatible with Xorg 7.2 and above, so now, every time I try to start Suse I get the error message:

"libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

So, I tried reinstalling my ATI driver from the original manufacturer, and it detects the incompatibility with Xorg 7.3, so it has an option to override it using a command X_SERVER=x071... something like that, and says that ot has successfully overwritten the file and reinstalled the driver, however, after running ATICONFIG --INITIAL, there's an error message which I cannot rememeber but that basically is saying that libX11.so.6 doesn't exist, so the issue persists and Xorg 7.3 is still the one installed. After trying about 3 times with the same results I now implore for your help my fellowes Suse users to enlighten my path in fixing this issue 'cause I just don't want to have to reinstall my OS.

Thank you for your time.

You won't need a reinstall. It just sounds like you need to downgrade your version of Xorg back to 7.1. There's a CUI version of YaST that you can run from a console login (as root of course), so downgrade the Xorg RPMs to 7.1 in the YaST software manager. Then reinstall the ATI driver.

That is the library used in SuSE 10.2's X11 version
Code:
ls /usr/lib64/libX11* -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2198702 2006-11-25 06:25 /usr/lib64/libX11.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root     830 2006-11-25 06:25 /usr/lib64/libX11.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      15 2007-01-14 09:58 /usr/lib64/libX11.so -> libX11.so.6.2.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      15 2007-05-06 07:11 /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.2.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1306784 2007-04-05 11:37 /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6.2.0

rpm -qf /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6
xorg-x11-libX11-7.2-15

how would you force xorg back to that version from the command line? (in either yast or smart or rug or w/e)
