Too long on shift key. Now I cannot type.

I was holding down too long on the shift key. I got
a message with two options. I clicked on the
continue box. When I went to console I cannot type
and get a character echo nor a response to my
commands. Rebooting gave the same problem. Inserting
the system disk and chosing other repair did not
cure it. Booting on the system disk and choosing
update system results in an error message about
60% of the way into the update.

Does anyone have any questions or suggestions?
Thanks for any pointers towards help.

Do you remember what the box said?

Any kind of error or anything like that?
