the package kdebase3-SuSE is no more present in new versions of KDE and causes this conflict. You may safely ignore the conflict (I am running KDE 3.3.1 and kdebase3-SuSE) or delete this package. It contains all the logos and wallpapers to give KDE the SuSE-look.

Following your instructions, I have been able to successfully update SuSE 9.1/KDE 3.2.1 to KDE 3.3.1 !!
I live out in the boonies and am stuck with a dial-up connection...so the download took many hours, but it's done now and I have seen no conflicts or anything....so far.

I go now to check out all of the links above.

OK, so how do you add an update source to YAST? When I use YAST to install software I'd like to make sure I'm always installing the latest version if there has been an update in updates.?

The 'normal' yast sources do not change in version. However the supplementary directories are updated when new version are released. To be sure to get the most recent version displayed in yast, it is advisable to refresh the formerly added sources (Change Source of Installation -> tick source -> Edit -> Refresh). This is not necessary if you just added the source.

OK, my question was how to get the version numbers to change. It seems silly to have YOU not incorporated into YAST. Why would I want to install an older program version off of the CD when perhaps there has been an updated release (possibly security related) released via "YOU"? YAST doesn't seem to reflect updated versions of packages. Short, I want YAST to work like Synaptic. I guess I don't see the need for both YOU and YAST package management.

You can identify if a package is a newer version by hovering your mouse pointer over it, as the tooltip displays whether the available version is newer or not, plus the text on older versions is in red, just go over the list of packages available and check your options to install, keep, upgrade, etc. until you are satisfied that everything is set up to your satisfaction.(and it never hurts to double check)

Once finished, just continue with the download and installation.

Edit: Disable CD/DVD as your installation source before you proceed.

OK, I'll explain a specific example. I've never installed abiword on my up-to-date 9.2 (via YOU). I want to install it. How do I install it so I get the latest version (abiword-2.0.6-8.2) which has been updated from the release package (abiword-2.0.6-8)? I go into YAST, search "abiword" and it shows the old version available to install, no mention of the new version.

Edit: I just figured out how I can the above via YOU, why isn't the information from YOU translated into YAST? Doesn't make sense, or question 2, how does one add an "updates" source to YAST?

sorry, misunderstood your original question (skimming through the posts to quickly). I agree, it is unfortunate that YOU isn't more heavily integrated into the rest of YaST. As for adding an updates source to YaST, I suppose one could just copy the url's of the update mirrors to the installation source list, but am not sure. I think I'll give it a try later and see what pops up.

On a similar note, I wouldn't even be worried about this if the base packages for 9.2 were available via apt. I'm new to Suse (Slacker), I understand we are waiting for the FTP release of 9.2 for these?

It also appears there is a way to add a cd-rom source to apt, I'll assume this doesn't mean the installation CD as this doesn't appear to work?

Sorry, I have been away for the night. I would like to correct what I think are missunderstandings:

From my knowledge, the company policy of SuSE has always been to keep a release of SuSE Linux on the same software versions. That's why the original installation sources (e.g. i386/9.1) never change.
But as there is always the need to release bugfixes and security updates (not version updates), SuSE offers YOU (e.g. i386/update/9.1).
And this is all that is supported by SuSE.
For all those who cannot wait until the next release of SUSE, they supply updates for major projects like KDE or gnome (i386/supplementary/). The installation is on own risk.
Some other people/projects also offer packages on the SUSE server in the projects folder. There one finds apache, mozilla etc. but not as a Yast compatible source.

To come back to your original question: I think (and I appreciate) that Yast is separated from YOU because of the consistency in the distribution. Maybe I want to downgrade. This is not possible if the packages have been replaced by newer versions (like this is the case for the KDE sources, where it is not possible to downgrade from 3.3.1 to 3.3 for example).

Sure there is apt and synaptic! And this is also supported by the SuSE servers. There is a huge apt repository for you to use whenever you want. But I (and probably SuSE) find apt a powerful, but for most applications too complicated tool. I think it's easy to mess up the system if you do not know what to do.

I recommend to browse the SuSE server for all those interesting sources

... do you mean uncheck the blue entries ... all the items listed in the summary are checked.

Additionally ... all the items under "Show packages with status" - Delete, Install, Update, Autodelete, Autoinstall, AutoUpdate, Taboo, and Protected all have "x's" in their boxes ... ?

Hi really like this thread, but (sorry for the but) it would be helpful to have a list of useful applications contained on the links which would encourage people to use them. Personally I'm looking for DVD rendering applications, any suggestions both as to source and application would be appreciated.
