sled 10 menu has vanished

My Sled 10 main menu froze up today rendering it useless ... it would not respond to mouse clicks etc.
So I killed the main-menu pid and when the alert came up and told me it died, I chose 'restart'. It did not reappear, I checked ps -e | grep menu, and it was once again running, but it wasn't on the panel.
So I killed it again and tried to re-add it to the main menu through right-click.
It still hasn't showed up after a logout-login, and reboot.
any help... it is pretty inconvenient to have a blank spot where the menu should be.
