Hi All,

I am trying to install OpenSuse 10.2 on a VMWare Workstation using the DVD ISO image which is downloaded from the site....Getting a problem stating
"Failed to initialize Catalog. Try again?

Cud some one help me in figuring out what the problem is?

I had the same problem and it seems to me that is bug on DVD.
I had to download the 5 cd set afterwards and installed it from there.
Btw, 10.2 is great, much better than the previous one. Download it, you won't regret.

Hmm... Haven't had similar problems. Have you tried burning the iso to a dvd or extracting the iso to a directory and using that?

...and I agree with joint. No sign of the out-of-the-box bugs that plagued 10.1. It seems much faster, too.

No..havent burnt the iso to a DVD..but using the iso directly instead of the CD Rom option in VMWare Workstation...any idea why is it failing?

I burned my dvd with Nero and got that same problem. I'll try now to burn it with Alcohol 120% and let you know if it fixs it....

You could also try booting to a knoppix disk or the Suse Live DVD (or any live distro, really) and burn it using K3b, but I doubt that is the problem. Did the MD5 on your iso match up good?

I had the same problem ravikumar79 did it failed to initialize packages. After aborting it took me to the kernel menu (havent seen that menu since my suse 6.2 days). I ran a cd/DVD check on it and it said it failed.

I burned the dvd using Nero.

I was wanting to try Suse after fedoracore 6 crashed big time on my system

Ok here is what i did using the dvd. I also noticed when installing from dvd is skipped the license agreement section.

I ended up doing an internet install of Suse.

Using the dvd on the main setup menu press f4 and change it to either http: or ftp: depending on your mirror you use. For my install i used ftp and ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/di.../10.2/repo/oss

it will ask for the ip address to the ftp server so you will need to do a reverse lookup on your mirror site ftp://mirrors.kernel.org happend to be 204.152.191.7

so enter ip

then it will prompt you for the install directory which is after the .org in the address or .com depending on the site

so i entered /opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss

press enter, it takes you back to the menu press enter for installation and if it works right it will just sit there showing the suse screen press escape key to see the progress its a 70mb file so you probably will need a fast internet connection.

It will take you to install screen like the one the dvd has except this time it will work.

Make sure you type correctly and get the right address if you dont it will take you to the kernel menu where you can change the stuff you entered and rety

out of curiosity, did you guys download the DVD via torrent or via http?

I usually use bittorrent because it seems that the integrity of the download is more assured that way (just from anecdotal personal experience). Right now my torrent box is busy as can be trying to get 40 GB of "special broadcast video" downloaded before Christmas for my wife (throw in a few lightscribed DVD's and jewel cases and we have an awesome and cheap gift!) so I used HTTP this time. Even with the torrent box running unlimited and my web server racking up the hits it still downloaded twice as fast as I could ever hope for with bt and the md5 was fine with only one try.

I used http directly from the openSuse.org site to download the dvd.

i gave up trying the http, it is fast, but is stalling quite often. Trying torrent again.
I have never been this eager for an OS so shortly after its release.

I tried DVD several times, and gave up and used CD's.. finally went through LOL

DVD worked for me, the setup has a small bug when you test display configurations, but that's all.
