Dual booting between SuSE 9.3 and 11.0.

I'm stumped.

I Installed SuSE 11.0 on a spare hard drive. Since I'm restricted, for the time being to dial-up, I made sure that smpppd & KInternet were installed. Modem is a legacy 56Kbd LT Winmodem.

Everything seemed to be fine with the install, except that the modem dies whenever the KInternet tool is clicked. By "dying," I mean that the tool shows the initial arrow to connect, but I don't hear the dial tone and the arrow disappears almost immediately.

Here is the log I get:
Currently, the modem is configured as modem0 and is read as /dev/ttyLT0.

I've tried these variations: /dev/modem0 ; /dev/ttyS0. Same result.

The only difference that I can see between the configuration in 9.3 and 11.0 is that in 9.3 the configuration had to be set in stupid-mode. Can't find that particular setting in 11.0. So I suspect this is the culprit.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had problems with it too. The linuxant drivers for Winmodems work very well. http://www.linuxant.com/company/ is their web page. For $20 you get full 56k speed with working fax too, and you get good support, and a license you can transfer to another PC if you upgrade. Plus you support some good folks.

They have some tools available for free, to help you identify the modem chipset you have, and a free version of their driver (limited to 14.4k), which you can try. Painless to install (an RPM package), and may solve your problem.

Since the modem works fine under SuSE 9.3, there shouldn't be a problem with 11.0. Shouldn't being the key phrase. Doesn't mean there isn't a problem. sigh....

Just an update.

Having tried all my options, several times, I broke down and bought USR5637 56K USB Faxmodem (controller based)... Something I should have done when I first had to drop back to using a modem for the internet.

Took the system down, removed the winmodem and installed the USB modem. Booted in as root. SuSE recognized the new hardware. Configured it and problem solved.

As an added bonus, this also appears to have solved the intermittant Fax problems I have always had since I first began using Linux (SuSE 9.1).
