Please tell us what video card you have in your computer, or what brand and model number your computer is. Put simply, the screen settings are determined by the video driver. I suspect you need to install either an ATI or Nvidia driver to get things running well.

Are you saying that your computer does not have a dedicated video card - nvidia or ati? So it has what are called onboard graphics?

If so start yast / then hardware. Then select the entry for your screen (this will start sax2). If your monitor is not shown (which I suspect will be the case as 10.1 is quite old now) use the nearest settings one that you can see and give that a go.

Thank you. Your computer uses an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset for Intel Processors. I recommend using the ATI drivers for openSUSE. I am posting a link that will be informative. http://en.opensuse.org/Howto/ATI_Driver Please note that you will have to use the "hard way" to install with your version of Linux. I would be tempted to update the system to a newer version; newer releases are easier to work with.
