installation-cum-Graphical problem

Hello all,
i'm a Slackware user.
For the first time i was trying to install SuSE 9.3 on my friends system.
everything went fine......it was booted well into Graphical mode ( init 5 ).

Now the problem was of horizontal and vertical refresh frequency.....
So without taking the backup of /etc/X11/xorg.conf ( my mistake ) i edited this file. Something went wrong...probably the mouse setting...i was making it ps/2 and bydefault /dev/mouse....but now this time system wasn't entring into the graphical mode.

So i changed it to /dev/tty1 ( initially it was /dev/tty01 )....rebooted....
system entered into the graphical mode...resoution was fine.
but now mouse as well as keyboard is not working....and the strange thing is that with some keys of keyboard e.g ctrl and alt, there is movement of mouse pointer.

So i'm not being able to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Then i tried booting from the first cd and entring into rescue mode.
But to my gr8 surprise no /etc/X11 is there. I saw this in Slackware too...but on reinstalling the grub using ...

#chroot /mnt/sysimage
#grub-install /dev/hda
it comes there.

I tried same here in SuSE, but its of no avail.
Then i tried changing the init level to '3' instead of '5' in /etc/inittab......but on rebooting the machine its agian init level '5' and not '3'..

So i'm not getting the way through it.

Any help will be appriciated.

regards

When the machine gets to the boot screen, press the F1 key, then press escape then type linux 3. This will take you to runlevel 3. From there as root run sax2, the yast graphics card/monitor utility will open, and you can set up the systems graphics from there.

The best options if not sure about the monitor are to choose either LCD, or Generic CRT. Then choose the resolution and a reasonable refresh rate. Test the settings, and if all looks good, then save them and exit. Reboot shutdown now -r and see if you get to the GUI.
