how to install guest additions in opensuse 12.1 virtual box install

In an opensuse 12.1 virtual box install, I have:
kernel sources
kernel that matches sources
gcc
make

When running guest additions, the main module fails to be built and installed, so it is a partial install. Here is the error:

error: kernel configuration is invalid. Include/generated/auto.conf are missing. Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.

How do I run make oldconfig && make prepare' ?

I've been running VB for a couple of years on openSuse and use this repo to get the .rpm binaries:

http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...openSUSE_12.1/

You need to make sure you have the Extensions Pack installed on the host first. Do that with no VM running. Then start the VM and select "Install Guest Additions" from the "Device" menu.

Much easier and safer than building from source.

Thank you for the links. Guest additions is now installed and runs much better. I have both opensuse host and vm running seamlessly. I found myself absorbed reading the tutorials and other docs so I bookmarked them for future reference/projects.
