Hal daemon will not work in SuSe 10.1

I recently upgraded from Suse 9.0 to 10.1 via DVD. I have a couple of outstanding problems. The most serious is that the Hal daemon will not load and when it is started manually it fails. This makes it difficult to use the CD/DVD drive and some USB stuff. Any suggestions? Also powersaved is screwed up in much the same way. thank you.
