Font sizes keep changing

After I compiled and installed a new 2.6.11 kernel, the font sizes on my desktop have been changing randomly. Sometimes when I boot up, they're normal, sometimes they are too small -- a font size of 12 looks like it's 8 or 9. I have KDE 3.4.0 and X 6.8.2 and I'm using the latest fglrx drivers from ATI. The problem was there before I had installed the drivers, though. I have also tried updating X and editing xorg.conf. My monitor is set in the config file as well as the font locations. The problem seems to be in KDE, but I have no idea how to fix it. The fact that the problem goes on and off makes it even more weird.

Here's a screenshot of the desktop with regular fonts...

...and here's one with tiny fonts. The icons have also moved by themselves, which also makes me think it has something to do with KDE.

Any help appreciated.
