Disabling the PC Speaker

Is there a way to disable the PC speaker completely in Linux? I don't mean the system bell but the whole thing. Why it matters is because I often stay up late at night at my computer and when the system is shut down it makes the BEEP BEEP sound and I don't want to disturb my family with it. I haven't found a setting for the speaker in BIOS. I searched google but all I found was some threads from years ago that contained the words kernel and compile so I stopped reading. I'm not ready to go that far...

Yes. I know some of you have real problems instead.

if the "beep beep" you're wanting to disable is when the computer POSTs you may need to open the case and simply disconnect the speaker cable.

still, you may be able to disable the speaker from beeping while linux is running but that setting wouldn't likely have any effect on the POST beeps because linux isn't running at that point so you're still going to hear those.

otherwise, i'm interested to know if it can be disabled while linux is running as that could still have some value... at least "less" beeps.

Damn. Well, thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll open my box with scissors in my hand some day.
